Lee Fletcher is an award winning[1] English record producer, arranger, musician, songwriter, mix & mastering engineer, also known (though perhaps less so) for creating music-related video. Recently he has emerged as an artist in his own right, releasing a debut solo album, 'Faith in Worthless Things,[2] in conjunction with long-term musical cohorts Lisa Fletcher and Markus Reuter.
Background
Lee has a long association with German touch-style guitarist Markus Reuter, with whom he has collaborated on numerous projects; The first substantial case being 2003's 'The Scent of Crash and Burn' (a joint-venture between Markus's band Centrozoon and No-Man singer Tim Bowness), which he co-produced and mixed.[3] Lee went on to contribute to a further two Centrozoon albums,[4][5] a digital-only remix EP,[6] plus an exclusive track that appeared on the Ozella label sampler 'Night',[7][8] as well as providing strategic support for other releases.[9] Since 2011 he has been the band's mastering engineer of choice.[10][11] Markus is the principal featured guitarist on Lee’s 2012 solo debut ‘Faith in Worthless Things’.
Another frequent collaborator is Lee's wife Lisa Fletcher who has performed vocals on a number of associated projects. Several titles by the duo (also featuring Reuter) produced under the [halo] name were made available online during the mid-late noughties. The pair featured on Pat Mastelotto and Markus Reuter's second studio album under the band name Tuner, which was entitled 'Pole'.[12] This CD was subsequently ranked amongst the "50 all-time Prog Classics" by US Modern Drummer magazine.[13] Lisa is a co-featured artist on ‘Faith in Worthless Things’, contributing the majority of vocals and co-writing one song.
Present / Future
Recent audio works have included contributions to recordings by David Lynch protégé Chrysta Bell (mastering of the as-yet-unreleased 'Strange Darling' album),[14] and This Fragile Moment, an improv ensemble fronted by Toyah Willcox, (production assistance and mastering).[15]
Lee's avant-garde documentary film OLDER THAN GOD (originally announced in early 2010[16]) has been re-imagined as a series of monthly webisodes beginning in October 2012.[17] The project promises to explore the creative worlds of (longtime collaborator) Markus Reuter, in a manner reflective of the tonal quality of his work.
In late 2011 / early 2012 Lee produced, co-arranged and mixed an album entitled 'Propeller' for singer/songwriter GRICE. Contributing artists included renowned pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole, touch guitarist Markus Reuter, saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft, and freeform trumpeter Luca Calabrese, as well as Lee himself who provided additional bass guitar, soundscapes, programming, and further compositional elements.[18] The album was described by UK 'PROG Magazine' as “a genuinely extraordinary slice of experimental rock”.[19]
Most recently Lee's focus has been his own project 'Faith in Worthless Things' which features a rich pool of musical contributors including guitarists Tim Motzer (David Sylvian / Nine Horses), BJ Cole, Robert Fripp, uilleann piper Alan Burton, violinist Steve Bingham (No-Man), trumpeter Luca Calabrese, and the aforementioned Markus and Lisa amongst others.[20]
On 1 November 2012 Lee was presented with the 'Best Producer 2012' award (following a combined public / music industry vote) at the second annual South West Music Awards.[21]
