Encouragement of Climb is a slice of life anime series based on the manga series written by Shiro and serialized in Comic Earth Star magazine.[1] When shy acrophobic Aoi Yukimura reunites with her childhood friend and mountaineering enthusiast Hinata Kuraue, on the first day of high school, she is reluctantly dragged on an adventure to explore the wonders of mountain climbing. The girls hope to ultimately see the sunrise from atop the mountain they climbed as children once more. Along the way, Aoi and Hinata make new friends and share many experiences.[2]
The series is produced by 8-Bit and directed by Yusuke Yamamoto with character designs by Yuusuke Matsuo.[3] The twelve episode first season consists of 5-minute-long episodes and aired between January 3 and March 21, 2013 on Tokyo MX and later by SUN-TV, AT-X and KBS along with online streaming by Niconico.[4] The second season consists of 15-minute-long episodes and aired on Tokyo MX between July 9, 2014 and December 24, 2014 followed by later airings on KBS, SDT, BS11 and AT-X along with online streaming on Niconico.[5] The series was also obtained by Crunchyroll which streamed both seasons as a simulcast with English subtitles.[6][7][8] Earth Star Entertainment released the complete season in Japan on a single Blu-ray and DVD volume on May 14, 2013.[9] The set also included an unaired 13th OVA episode.[10] Bonus episodes were included with the 2nd and 7th Blu-ray and DVD volumes of the second season, released on October 24, 2014 and March 27, 2015 respectively.[11]
For the first season, the opening theme is "Staccato Days" (スタッカート・デイズ) by Yuka Iguchi and Kana Asumi. For the second season, the opening theme for the first 15 episodes is "Natsuiro no Present" (夏色プレゼント Natsuiro no Purezento, Summer-colored Present) by Yuka Iguchi, Kana Asumi, Yōko Hikasa, and Yui Ogura, while the theme for episode 16 onwards is "Mainichi Koharu Biyori" (毎日コハルビヨリ Everyday Indian Summer) by Iguchi and Asumi.[12] The ending theme for the first twelve episodes is "Tinkling Smile" by Ogura, the ending theme for episodes 13-15 is "Staccato Days" (スタッカート・デイズ Sutakkāto Deizu) by Iguchi and Asumi, and the ending theme for episode 16 onwards is "Cocoiro Rainbow" by Kyouko Narumi.[13]

Aoi Yukimura is invited by two of her classmates to have tea after the first day of high school. However Aoi frantically rejects their invitation due to her difficulty in interacting with her peers, preferring instead to further her hobbies. Aoi's childhood friend, Hinata Kuraue then approaches and invites her to climb mountains like they did in the past, much to her reluctance since she had developed a fear of heights. While remembering that hanging out with Hinata only brought her misfortune, Aoi is reluctantly dragged to Hinata's home after school to plan a mountaineering expedition. | |||

Aoi recalls neglecting peer socializing in favor of indoor hobbies ever since an accident in a jungle gym. Over at Hinata's home, Aoi meets Hinata's father before she is introduced to all of their family's climbing gear. As Hinata starts to make plans, her father refuses to let them climb before they learn the basics of mountaineering and hence shows them how to set up a tent. As the girls watch the sunset from the tent, Hinata recalls the time they went up a mountain to watch the sunrise with her father. Tearfully recalling the memory, Aoi agrees to climb with Hinata providing the mountain isn't too high. | |||

The next day at school, Aoi suggests they climb the nearby Mt. Tenran. While preparing that night, Aoi packs a bag filled with equipment and makes sandwiches in an attempt to show off her feminine prowess to Hinata. The next day, Aoi gets scared when Hinata shows up in her school uniform instead of being outfitted in climbing gear, but soon discovers all they have to do is simply walk up the visitor's path. When they reach the top, the girl's marvel at the view and have tea while sharing the sandwiches Aoi made. Hinata then begins planning their next climb much to Aoi's surprise. | |||

Hinata suggests they have a cooking competition using climber's equipment after enjoying Aoi's previous sandwiches. Aoi later finds herself at the supermarket happily shopping for ingredients and eventually prepares paella which Hinata praises. This causes Aoi to wonder if Hinata is genuinely nice or if she herself is just over-thinking things. Hinata then presents her own dish which Aoi likes. However her father reveals that Hinata can't actually cook and cheated using freeze dried food. Afterwards the three of them have dinner and Aoi realizes that Hinata really cares for those around her. | |||

Aoi and Hinata stop off at a mountaineering store. While browsing through the assortment of items, Aoi comes across a girl named Kaede Saito, struggling to choose a schlafsäcke. Kaede explains that she is a backpacker and asks for Aoi's advice on a selection. Aoi advises Kaede to get the more expensive one to not have any regrets later on. This makes Kaede happy and they exchange emails before Kaede makes her purchase and leaves. Aoi later laments her trouble with making friends, but Hinata teases that she already knew. Some time later, Kaede sends Aoi a picture with the schlafsäcke as thanks for her help. | |||

Hinata goads Aoi into deciding their next mountaineering trip and the latter gets disappointed in herself for always falling for Hinata's. Aoi decides to ask Kaede for advice on a mountain selection and gives her a call. Kaede runs through a list of mountains for Aoi including Mount Tanigawa, which she declines due to her fear of heights. Aoi eventually settles on Mount Takao since there are special shrines along it where a person can make wishes. Afterwards, Aoi wonders what she should dedicate her life to and tells Hinata about Mount Takao the next day at school which the latter agrees upon. | |||

In preparation for their climb up Mount Takao, the girls read a guide containing information about the types of gear they should carry. Since Aoi lacks a backpack, they visit the mountaineering store to purchase one. With Aoi unable to decide, Hinata asks the store clerk for help and he explains the different types of packs. Hinata later tells Aoi that she doesn't have to be shy to ask for help, and even fronts her the difference to purchase a yellow daypack. While the girls head home, Hinata gives Aoi the same advice the latter had given to Kaede in choosing a schlafsäcke and teases that Aoi has to pay her back with interest. | |||

The girls arrive at the Takaosanguchi Station for their climb up Mount Takao and Hinata notes that Aoi is more excited than usual because of all the wishing spots she hopes to visit along the climb. As they begin their ascent, Aoi's enthusiasm soon gets the better of her and she hurriedly moves forward without pacing herself and soon tires out. The girls stop at a rest spot and refresh themselves while looking at the Tokyo Skytree in the distance. Before they leave Aoi purchases a souvenir for Hinata as thanks for her treat, but soon finds herself too embarrassed to give it to her as time passes and they visit more and more wishing spots. | |||

After visiting various wishing spots during their ascent, the girls soon reach the summit and decide to have lunch at Mount Takao's Lookout Park with a view of Mount Fuji in the distance. Aoi is able to give Hinata the present before Hinata suggests they take a different path down the mountain. As they descend, they come across the naturalist, Kokona Aoba who is stuck because the sole of her shoe had been coming off. However Hinata gives her quick repairs. The three girls then continue walking and Kokona explains that she came to see the flying squirrels but sulks when Hinata mentions that Mt. Takao only has giant squirrels. | |||

Aoi, Hinata and Kokona continue descending Mount Takao and find the trail they are following leads to stepping stones along a river's path. As Hinata goes on ahead, Kokona can't continue along the path because of her shoes, so Aoi decides to hold her hand even though she falls along the stones anyway. This prompts Hinata to also hold hands with them and they continue along the path all they way until the exit at base of the mountain. The girls the spot a tiny tree squirrel as they remark on the fun they had during their adventure. Before they part ways, Kokona adds that she also lives in Hanno City and the girls decide to meet up again. | |||

As Summer begins, Aoi notes the beach's changed atmosphere and Hinata suggests a trip to the Hanno River Beach. Since Hinata tasks Aoi and Kokona with preparing snacks, Aoi invites Kokona to a sleepover so they can plan ahead. Kokona and Aoi end up agreeing to prepare French toast after the former makes them sound appealing. Meanwhile, Hinata and Kaede also do some shopping, since Hinata wishes to do all she can to be closer friends with Aoi. Afterwards, Aoi and Kokona prepare the toast before having fun during their sleep over, with Aoi remarking that the next day would be even more fun. | |||

The girls head over to the beach and while looking at the sight, Aoi wonders why people gather there. Kokona prepares tomato risotto from the random ingredients Hinata and Kaede had bought and the girls continue having fun. Aoi realizes that people come to the beach for that exact reason of being happy with others. As the day ends, the girls look at the stars as Aoi laments that they can't see many stars from the city. However Kaede adds that all the stars are visible when you climb to the top of mountains. As Aoi remarks that she wishes to see all the stars in the galaxy, the four girls continue stargazing. | |||

Hinata invites Kokona and a reluctant Aoi to try out indoor climbing. The girls run into Kaede who offers to teach them how to ascend the climbing wall. After seeing Hinata give it a try, Aoi takes a turn and discovers that she actually had fun and attempts a more difficult course. She soon finds herself stuck at the top of the wall. However thanks to Hinata's cheering, she lets go of the grip and falls on the soft cushions below. Afterwards, Kaede explains that she also used to have a fear of heights, but overcame it by experiencing the thrill of climbing. Despite acknowledging her fear though, Kaede's words motivate Aoi to become stronger. |

Picking a mountain at random, they decide to plan a trip up Mount Mitsutōge, which serves as a perfect viewing spot, keeping the destination a secret from Aoi. As the girls make their way up the trail, they try to keep Aoi from seeing Mt. Fuji until they reach the top. | ||

After accidentally stumbling upon a view of Mt. Fuji herself, Aoi tries to keep it a secret from the others as they carry on up the mountain. With the path becoming tougher to climb, Aoi struggles but receives encouragement from Kaede, who had guessed Aoi had figured out her surprise. After overcoming a treacherous cliff path, Aoi is rewarded with a better view of Mt. Fuji, which feels more rewarding thanks to all the effort she put in to reach it. | ||

As Aoi becomes depressed, her father encourages her to convince her mother that she is doing something that she loves, eventually managing to get her permission. | ||

After several unforeseen events leave the river unfit for swimming, the girls instead decide to wear their swimsuits in Hinata's garden pool, where Hinata's "sexy" swimsuit turns out to just be her school swimsuit. | ||

The girls make their preparations for the Mt. Fuji climb, with Kaede advising the girls to bring plenty of snacks to fuel themselves. On the night before the climb, Aoi hears from Kaede about how she continues to push through the hard moments to enjoy the happy memories. The next day, Aoi joins up with the others as they set off for Mt. Fuji. | ||

With Aoi unable to climb any further, much to her dismay, Hinata and Kokona aim to reach the summit before sunrise on her behalf. | ||

Hinata and Kokona manage to reach the summit in time to watch the sunrise. Meanwhile, as Aoi and Kaede watch from the 8th station, Aoi feels frustrated that she wasn't able to make it to the summit herself. Later, Hinata and Kokona decide to circle around the basin at the top of the mountain, eventually reaching the highest peak, while Aoi and Kaede make their descent back towards the 5th station. After the group reassemble and head on the bus back, Aoi is left downhearted by the experience. | ||

As summer vacation begins, Aoi has still remained depressed from her failure, with Hinata unsure about how to help her. Upon receiving some postcards Hinata and Kokona had sent from Mt. Fuji's summit, Aoi decides to take a walk up Mt. Ternran, the first mountain she climbed with Hinata, and coincidentally ends up meeting her there. Together, they explore the other nearby mountains, cheering her up and encouraging her to tackle mountains once more. | ||

Feeling nostalgic, Kaede rings up Yuuka and the two go out shopping together. | ||

As Aoi is encouraged by Kaede's words and decides to take on Tanigawa, Kaede gives her her old raincoat that she bought with Yuuka. | ||

Kaede instead calls in Yuuka to help tutor them over the next week, allowing them to get it done in time. | ||

After returning home, Kokona celebrates her birthday with her mother, who ran a little late home from work. Meanwhile, Aoi, who spent the day making a pound cake, wonders about what will happen after her dream is fulfilled. | ||

The day of the Mount Tanigawa climb finally arrives, with Hinata also pondering what will happen after she and Aoi fulfil their dream. After a series of staircases and some obligatory forms, the girls arrive at Tanigawa, where Aoi must face the cable car first hand. Despite Aoi still being afraid, the other girls help her get through it before Hinata helps her ride a ski lift. | ||

As the girls officially start climbing up the mountain, they encounter a quiet young photographer named Honoka, who had previously helped them by the cable car. After encountering some rainfall, the girls arrive at the mountain hut, where Aoi and Hinata look back on memories of their previous time there, worrying what happens after their promise is fulfilled. | ||

Both have trouble finding an opportunity to apologize to each other during the festival, but soon find they don't really need to, quickly forgetting why they even fought in the first place. | ||
