Presidential elections were held in Lithuania in December 1997 and January 1998. In the first round on 21 December, the independent candidate Artūras Paulauskas led the former US civil servant Valdas Adamkus. However, in the second round on 4 January 1998, Adamkus led Paulaskas and won a majority vote.
