Logan is an upcoming 2017 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine, produced by Marvel Entertainment, TSG Entertainment, and The Donners' Company, and distributed by 20th Century Fox.[5][6] It is intended to be the tenth installment in the X-Men film series, as well as the third and final Wolverine solo film following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013).[7][8] The film takes inspiration from Old Man Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, which follows a past-his-prime Logan undertaking a final adventure in the post-apocalyptic future.[9][10][11]

The film is being directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Green and Scott Frank, from a story by David James Kelly and Mangold.[12] Hugh Jackman stars as Logan in what is intended to be his final portrayal of the character after having played the role for 17 years, with Patrick Stewart co-starring as Charles Xavier.[13] Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez are all featured in supporting roles.[14][15] Principal photography began in Louisiana on May 2, 2016 and ended on August 19th, 2016 in New Mexico.[16][17][18] The locations used for Logan were mainly Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi.[19][20][21]

Logan is scheduled to be released on March 3, 2017 in the United States in 3D, and IMAX formats.[22]

Synopsis

Years after the epilogue of X-Men: Days of Future Past, some of the last mutants, an aging Logan—whose healing factor is starting to fail—and Charles Xavier, protect a young girl named Laura who is very similar to Logan, and is being hunted by sinister forces.[23]

Cast

A physically enhanced mutant with accelerated healing, who's dealing with his age and ailment.[24][23] Mangold describes Logan as "old", as well as stating, "it’s clear his abilities aren't what they once were.",[25] as well as one of Charles Xavier's carers, alongside Caliban.[25] Mangold spoke of Logan's age influencing his regenerative capabilities, to which he states may no longer produce soft skin,[26] "[...] So we imagined he heals quickly, still, but it leaves a scar. The simple idea was that his body would start to get a little more ravaged with a kind of tattooing of past battles, lacerations that remain of previous conflicts."[27] Jackman indicated that he believed he was nearing the end of his run as Wolverine, so there was speculation early on that his next film could be his last.[28] On the second page of screenplay, Mangold spoke of Logan as "[...] he's older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller."[29][30] Jackman requested for fan input on the direction Wolverine's story should go in the next film, while seeming to confirm that the project would serve as his farewell to Logan.[31] To prepare for his role, Jackman ate a minimum of six meals per day, when working with trainer Mike Ryan.[32] Ryan stated that an average workout session for Jackman lasts up to three hours, beginning at 4:00 a.m.[33] Jackman stated, "[...] it's going to be very different. Very different in tone and hopefully different to anything we’ve done."[34] Jackman explained that comedian Jerry Seinfeld was indirectly responsible for his decision to stop playing Logan after 17 years, with Jackman stating, "I was having a chat with [Seinfeld] about a year ago [...] he was talking about why he finished Seinfeld [...] He said he'd always had this feeling and belief that you never know when either your energy or the audience's energy is going to dip over into people [saying] 'Oh, please go.'"[35]
A mutant who is the world's most powerful telepath, and founder and former leader of the X-Men.[36][37] Charles' telepathic abilities have become unstable, and at times he doesn't even remember who Logan is.[25] During the events of Logan, Xavier is cared for by Logan and Caliban.[38] On August 13, 2015, Stewart, in an interview with Collider.com, expressed intrigue at the possibility of an Old Man Logan story, with him stating, "[...] The idea of an old Wolverine, I'm really looking forward to [Jackman] getting old [...]".[39][40] When asked of rumors about his involvement in Mangold's film he remarked "I think what you say is true. There is a project in development. I understand that Professor Xavier will be making more than an appearance, however, and that intrigues me."[41] Prior to filming Logan, Stewart spoke of a different version of the character, "He's a terrific character, but I am looking forward - if what I've been told is true - to a different version of Charles. We shall see."[42] On the character of Xavier, Mangold mentions the themes of ageing and loneliness, to which he further explains,[43] "We've seen these characters in action, saving the universe. But what happens when you're in retirement and that career is over?[44] The really interesting thing to me, or a place to dig that hadn't been dug, was the idea of mutants when they're no longer useful to the world, or even sure if they can do what they used to do. Their powers are diminished like all of ours are by age."[23] Speaking of his appearance in Mangold's film, Stewart remarked that "[...] this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it's the end, it's over."[45]

He just wants to hang out with him [...] There's a lot of surprising stuff in it.[49] Mangold spoke very highly of Holbrook's acting talents, and speaking as to his casting decision, Mangold remarked, "He’s a fabulous actor. He's also, to me, in terms of playing an antagonist, he's got humour."[23]
A mutant who can sense and track other mutants, who is helping Logan take care of Xavier.[25] On Merchant taking the role, Mangold mentioned, "I'm always interested to find the thing that looks most interesting on the actors. Stephen is a huge man. One of the things that is so wonderful filming with him for a character like this is that he’s a good six inches taller than Logan, and huge over Patrick. The little kid in the movie would come up to basically his knee. So there's a wonderful sense of scale – but he has heart too."[23] Mangold concluded by stating, "So that was a wonderful energy to enter the movie, and someone who instead of turning things into their own energy kind of joined ours."[23] Caliban was previously portrayed by Tómas Lemarquis in X-Men: Apocalypse.[50]
A mysterious young girl who is "very much" like Logan.[46] On whether Keane's character may be in actual fact X-23, the female clone of Logan, Mangold stated, "I'm not here today to confirm or deny anything. I think it's great that everyone's speculating and I think it reveals how smart the audience is, many of the fans, about these characters. I don’t think they’re on the wrong track."[23] On Keen's portrayal of Laura, Mangold mentioned, "If anyone could steal a movie from [Jackman], it would be Dafne. She carries, all the time, a slight strangeness."[52] Sienna Novikov served as Keen's stunt double.[53][54]

Additionally, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez have been cast in unidentified supporting roles.[55][56][57] Doris Morgado appears as Maria.[58] In the commentary to X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer indicated that his film's post-credits scene would directly connect with the on-screen debut X-Men antagonist Mister Sinister in Logan.[59][60][61][62][63]

Production

Development

"Hugh and I have been talking about what we would do since we were working on the last one, and for both of us it was this requirement that, to be even interested in doing it, we had to free ourselves from some assumptions that had existed in the past, and be able to change the tone a bit. Not merely to change for change’s sake, but also to make something that’s speaking to the culture now, that’s not just the same style — how many times can they save the world in one way or another? How can we construct a story that’s built more on character and character issues, in a way as if it almost wasn’t a superhero movie, yet it features their powers and struggles and themes?"

On November 5, 2013, Deadline.com reported that 20th Century Fox had begun negotiations for another solo film starring Wolverine, with James Mangold in negotiations to write the treatment for the film, and Lauren Shuler Donner returning to produce under The Donners' Company.[65][66][67][68] On November 13, 2013, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman neither confirmed nor denied whether he had officially signed on to reprise Logan in another film,[69][70] though Jackman insisted that his lapsing contract with Fox, which reportedly will need to be renegotiated after X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014),[71] doesn't mean he'll leave the franchise, as he's been working movie-by-movie since X2 (2003).[72] He also stated, "I do want to do it with Jim and with [producer] Lauren Shuler-Donner because we had such a great experience. I'm really proud of The Wolverine (2013)."[73] On November 19, 2013, in an interview with Collider.com, James Mangold announced that the pre-production aspect of the film hasn't begun as of yet, nor the writing process, though he furthered this by stating, "[...] I would say I’m not there yet. But I have taken finger to key. Let’s say that. There’s been typing. And ideas. And talking amongst all the principles."[74]

Shortly after the release of The Wolverine, on November 19, 2013, Mangold spoke of a potential sequel with the aim of not converting it into a "Will the world survive?" film, while also stressing "[...] not to make the same picture again."[75][76] Mangold also mentioned some of the potential development structure that he may employ, while also addressing issues of character-centricity,[77] "I think the key thing for me, you heard me talking about how I construct scripts, is just figuring out the key relationships and just what it’s about, what theme the whole thing is going to be about. I've got a good angle on it, but I'm not ready to talk about it yet!"[78] On December 5, 2013, Jackman was interviewed by Vanity Fair wherein he spoke of nearing the end of his tenure as the character, while stating the film being in the very early stages of development.[79] Jackman also revealed that Mangold and he had begun speaking of potential ideas, with him adding, "[...] Jim Mangold and I were literally on the phone last night talking about ideas but there is no script and no writer yet so it’s a way off."[80]

On March 16, 2014, it was reported that Mangold will begin to shooting after Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), with the tentative plan to shoot it back-to-back,[81][82] with producer Hutch Parker stating, "[...] the goal will be X:Men: Apocalypse for 2016, which means at the latest [filming begins] in summer 2015, and then the same thing with Wolverine, either before or after, but based on the script."[83] On March 20, 2014, 20th Century Fox set the film for a release of March 3, 2017.[84][85] Following the announcement by 20th Century Fox, The Hollywood Reporter had revealed that James Mangold was boarding the project as director.[86] On March 21, 2014, Deadline.com had revealed that Hugh Jackman will be reprising his signature role,[87] while 20th Century Fox was confirmed to have hired David James Kelly to pen the screenplay for Mangold's as-yet unnamed piece.[88] On April 30, 2014, Jackman was interviewed by SFX Magazine, wherein he spoke about his ambitious feelings for the character of Logan, while mentioning that they can go further than what they achieved in The Wolverine.[89] Jackman also expressed his feelings of finality with portraying the character of Logan,[90] while in terms of storyline, he explained that nothing had been decided as of yet.[91] Jackman concluded by highlighting the success of the script development will decide whether or Jackman returns at all,[92] "I haven't signed on signed on. I'm genuinely at that point where unless it's better than the last one I'm not going to do it. I think it has to be better. I can still see where we can improve on the last one. I love the intimacy of that story, I liked the small stuff, I liked that it was a little unexpected."[93]

In an interview with The Oregonian, on February 6, 2015, Patrick Stewart spoke of discussions for the third Wolverine film to centre around a team-up between Jackman's Wolverine and himself as Charles Xavier,[94][95] with Stewart stating to Marc Mohan that, "[...] we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together [...] That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I've already done."[96][97] On April 24, 2015, The Wrap reported that Michael Green had taken over screenwriting duties, with Mangold still actively overseeing the script development process.[98] On September 24, 2015, in an interview with Collider.com, Jackman spoke of the writers being halfway through the script and that the story will delve into the relationship between Wolverine and Professor X,[99] to which he expanded, "I think it's a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before."[100][101] Jackman spoke of Mangold's plan being to start filming next year, though expressed uncertainty as to the filming locations.[102] On January 26, 2016, Jackman confirmed that Mangold had a full screenplay, albeit it's not complete.[103] On September 25, 2015, Mark Millar, creative consultant for Fox, confirmed Mangold's film will be a loose adaptation of the Old Man Logan story, something which was hinted at earlier by Jackman.[104]

On February 29, 2016, Liev Schreiber had expressed interest in returning to portray Victor Creed, with Jackman himself mentioning Mangold's vision to Schreiber.[105][106][107][108] On April 8, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter officially reported, after final negotiations took place, that Mangold had chosen actor Boyd Holbrook to portray the main antagonist of the piece,[109][110][111] with Variety stating that "Holbrook would portray the chief of security for a global corporation pursuing Jackman's Wolverine character."[112][113] On April 26, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter officially reported that Richard E. Grant was revealed to have been cast as an as-of-yet unnamed villainous mad scientist.[114][115] On April 27, 2016, Deadline.com reported that Stephen Merchant was cast in an unspecified role.[116][117][118][119][120] On May 4, 2016, Variety officially reported that Eriq Lasalle was cast as an as-of-yet unnamed role, as well as Elise Neal on May 5, 2016.[121][122] On May 9, 2016, producer Simon Kinberg, in an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, revealed that filming had already begun, while confirming that it will be R-rated, while suggesting the setting and tonality,[123] to which he stated, "It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It's violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film."[124][125] On May 18, 2016, TheWrap officially reported that Elizabeth Rodriguez was in negotiations to star in Mangold's film, with them stating that Rodriguez is "[...] making a deal for a small but key role [...]".[126][127]

Filming

Principal photography for Logan took place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

On March 5, 2015, James Mangold anticipated that filming would begin "early next year."[128][129] Prior to filming, the film was given the false title of Juarez to lower the visibility of production, but the local media eventually uncovered the ruse.[130][131][132][133] On March 1, 2016, The Times-Picayune had confirmed that Mangold's film is preparing to shoot in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a starting schedule of May.[134] Producers Kinberg, Shuler Donner and Parker choose to film in Louisiana because of its popularity in the history film making locations,[135] as well as it's filming incentive which includes a 40% tax credit for movie productions, but requiring a minimum spend of USD300,000.[136] Principal photography was confirmed to have begun in New Orleans, Louisiana, with an original shooting schedule occurring from April 25 to August 13, 2016,[135][137][138] albeit shooting was altered to start on May 2, 2016.[139]

On May 23, 2016, filming took place at the NASA Michoud Plant in New Orleans East,[140] with Jackman being spotted, not far from Slidell, shooting a fight scene outdoors on the property.[141] On May 26, 2016, the intersection of LA 16 at US 51 was closed for a time due to filming, with local store fronts don faux signage to transform Amite City, and east of Amite near Bell Road.[142] It was revealed that scenes were filmed prior in Husser on May 25, 2016, with a scheduled daytime shoot to occur at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Hammond on May 27, 2016.[143] Filming took place from June 9, 2016 until June 10, 2016, in New Orleans and Metairie respectively.[144]

On June 1, 2016, it was confirmed that 20th Century Fox have applied to film exterior scenes for Juarez on Louisiana Highway 15 between Ferriday and Clayton from June 12, 2016 up until June 16, 2016,[145] at the Ferriday Plaza Shopping Center,[146] while a portion of U.S. Route 425 between Ferriday and Clayton will be closed for a five-day period in connection with Fox's production.[147][148] On June 1, 2016, The Concordia Sentinel revealed that Sicily Island High School and a house in Sicily Island will be used in the production, while a crash scene will be shot on U.S. Route 425 just outside of Ferriday.[147] Producers Kinberg, Shuler Donner and Parker choose to film in Ferriday, Louisiana because of Concordia Parish's beautiful countryside and green cornfields.[149] On June 16, 2016, Juarez was originally scheduled to move on toward Sicily Island, however, additional periods of shooting were added.[150] Natchez, Mississippi had been chosen by producers of Juarez as the next filming location, for an upcoming scene which required the casting truck drivers,[151] that will be filmed between June 14 up until June 28, 2016.[152]

On July 12, 2016, The Albuquerque Journal confirmed that Juarez will move on to its third major filming location – New Mexico, which will run through August in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Abiquiú, Tierra Amarilla and Chama.[153][154][155][156][157][158] The New Mexico Film Office revealed that the production will employ about 130 New Mexican crew members and two New Mexican cast members, as well as 600 extras throughout the production, the film office stated.[159] On July 17, 2016, it was reported that the production ofJuarezwere in the process of casting to work on a scene filmed on July 22, 2016 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[160] On July 25, 2016, it was reported that filming had begun in the Northern Meadows neighborhood of Rio Rancho, while a few miles further down King Boulevard there is an elaborate set built with a toppled water tower,[155] that will be used for exterior shots until June 27, 2016.[161][162] On August 11, 2016, it was reported that the production of Juarez were in the process of seeking worn out cars to work on an upcoming scene filmed on August 12, 2016 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[163][164]

Principal photography was confirmed to have ended in New Mexico on August 13, 2016,[165][166][167] with an altered shooting schedule occurring from May 2 to August 13, 2016,[135] while with post-production beginning subsequent to filming closure on August 23, 2016.[168][169][170]

Post-production

Film editor Michael McCusker was finishing work on Mangold's Logan, during the period of October 7, 2016, wherein he spoke of going through the dailies and breaking them down, and figuring out the structure of one scene which he described as a "complicated, multi-component scene".[3] McCusker spoke of the task being rather time consuming, on the front end, albeit stating, "I am looking at the back end experience with [Mangold] as the more important experience. I don't want to be searching for stuff for him, I want to working towards getting the cut right."[3] McCusker concluded by stating that another editor on Logan has use for post-production.[3]

On October 3, 2016, Jackman had provided an update on the post-production period of Logan, with him stating to Entertainment Tonight, "We’ve finished shooting. I just saw Jim Mangold today. He’s editing away and finishing that. There’s going to be some stuff coming out in the next week or so."[171][172]

Visual effects

Chas Jarrett was the overall Visual Effects Supervisor and visual effects company Image Engine worked on most of the visual effects on Logan.[173][174][175]

Music

On July 1, 2016, it was announced that the musical score to Logan will composed by Cliff Martinez.[176][177][178][179]

Influences

In an interview with Empire Magazine's Helen O'Hara,[23] James Mangold spoke of cinematography-based framing, while noting that he doesn't necessarily think about the "comic-book" related sort, instead highlighting the variety of stylistic influences that went into Logan,[180] such as film noir framings, classic Hollywood filmmaking styles, as well as Germanic expressionist filmmaking style of the early part of the last century, to which Mangold also stated have a commonality with that of comic-book art, while being those to which he uses in Logan.[181] Mangold highlighted "Strong foregrounds, playing things in depth: you have to make an image say more within that one image."[182]

Using the image of Logan at a funeral as an example of his stylistic logic,[183] Mangold concluded by mentioning the aspects within modern filmmaking, primarily everything in close-up format, whereas for Logan his aim was to set frames that are descriptive, albeit, are evocative of comic-book panels and classical filmmaking.[184]

Release

On March 21, 2014, 20th Century Fox announced that Logan will be given the release date of March 3, 2017.[185][186][187][188] On October 30, 2015, Fox confirmed that Logan will be released in IMAX format.[189][190][191] On October 5, 2016, the title of the film was announced as Logan.[192][193]

Marketing

On July 28, 2015, Jackman, on his Twitter, posted an image of Logan giving the middle finger with his claw, coupled with the hashtag "#OneLastTime", to signify his last appearance portraying Logan,[194][195][196] while asking for other people's suggestions about how to end his career as the titular mutant.[197] On April 28, 2016, Fox decided not to showcase its upcoming movie releases, including Logan in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con as the studio felt it could not prevent the piracy of custom trailers and exclusive footage routinely screened for fans in attendance.[198][199]

The first official image for Mangold's film debuted on October 5, 2016, introducing the first look at the film's teaser poster, as well as the revelation that the film is to be titled Logan.[200] Following the film's title revelation, on October 5, 2016, Mangold also revealed the second page of the script, which gave a taste of the different tone Jackman and himself had promised for Logan.[201] On October 6, 2016, Mangold, on his Instagram, posted a picture of Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Charles Xavier.[202][203][204][205][206] On October 7, 2016, Mangold released three mysterious set images, up until the date of October 9, 2016, with the first featuring a severed arm clutching a shotgun.[207][208] The second image revealed a keep out sign, written in Spanish, with the first part reading, "Notice. The law prohibits entrance ..." the second part, no comprende.", suggesting Logan may make his way down south during the film.[209][210][211] The third set image, to which was released by Mangold, was an artsy photo of a motel suggesting Logan might be on the run in this film.[212][213]

The third official image for Logan debuted on October 10, 2016, introducing the first look at Boyd Holbrook's character with the one-word caption "Pierce",[214] as well as conformation that Holbrook will be portraying the evil cyborg Donald Pierce.[215][216][217] On October 11, 2016, Mangold released a set image featuring a "smelting plant",[218] which features a large tipped over tower, as well as including a black limousine sporting a Texan license plate.[219][220] On October 12, 2016, Logan's official Instagram released a black-and-white photo captioned "Prom", and showing an unidentified actor in a prom suit standing in the street and striking a pose,[221][222][223][224] while the following day, Wponx released another black-and-white photo, captioned "Rest Stop"; with an old truck parked at a gas station.[225][226][227] On October 13, 2016, Mangold revealed storyboard art, from artist Gabriel Hardman, involving Logan leaping at a vehicle and driving his claws through the windshield.[228][229] Following the Gabriel Hardman storyboard art, on October 14, 2016, Jackman posted a black-and-white photo,[230] with the question, "Where are all the mutants?" scrawled into a bathroom stall door.[231][232] On October 17, 2016, Mangold, on his Twitter, posted a terrifying portrait depicting Stephen Merchant with bleached-white skin, a bald pate, and icy blue-green eyes.[233][234] Additionally, Merchant posted a black-and-white photo — captioned "How I spent my summer" — showing him shielded from the elements by a brimmed hat and a kerchief.[235][236]

The official Instagram account for Logan, on October 18, 2016, shared a photo of a man with a gun, played by David Kallaway, captioning it "Reaver."[237] On October 19, 2016, Entertainment Weekly released the first photo of an aged Logan sporting a few gray hairs, beaten skin, a noticeable scar, and a haunted look in his eyes.[238]

On October 20, 2016, 20th Century Fox released a 90-second teaser trailer to promote Logan,[239] following a 6-second sneak peak the prior day.[240] Later that day, 20th Century Fox released an international red band version of the trailer, featuring slightly more graphic violence than the original.[241][242] The Hollywood Reporter's Aaron Couch praised the trailer, and stated, "If Logan delivers on the promise of this trailer, it will be a true rarity in modern superhero movie making.[243] James Dyer of Empire Magazine heralded the trailer and its director, James Mangold, by stating: "We've had a veritable feast of great trailers [...] from John Wick (2017) to Rogue One (2016), Assassin's Creed (2016) and A Cure for Wellness (2017). But none [...], no matter how impressive, have been quite so artfully constructed as this glorious first look at [Mangold]'s Logan.[244] Forrest Wickman of Slate called the trailer "surprisingly mournful".[245]

The official Instagram account for Logan, on October 23, 2016, shared a black-and-white image of Dafne Keen, with the caption "Laura".[51][246][247] A week after the first trailer debuted, on October 26, 2016, Mangold revealed a new image of a shirtless Logan, bloodied and scarred, standing in front of a mirror.[248][249] On November 1, 2016, Mangold posted an image of Logan to his Twitter account with details on how it was photographed,[250] while unveiling another pair of Gabriel Hardman's storyboards from the film that feature the Liberty Motel.[251][252] On November 3, 2016, Logan's official Instagram released a black-and-white photo captioned "Weapon", and showing the backside of an unidentified actor wearing a plaid shirt, wielding a metal bar,[253][254] while on November 8, 2016, Jackman shared a black-and-white photo, on Twitter, showing an aging Logan standing outside a house at night, apparently over the body of a fallen foe.[255] On November 10, 2016, Wponx released another black-and-white photo, captioned "Motor Motel", which shows the top edge of a building with the Statue of Liberty as the logo.[256][257] On November 14, 2016, 20th Century Fox released an international poster, featuring the Logan, with his claws out, carrying Laura while on the run.[258][259][260][261]
