Louisiana Highway 3261 (LA 3261) was a state highway in Louisiana that served Jefferson Parish. LA 3261 spanned 0.25 miles (0.40 km) from south to north along Shrewsbury Road.[1]
Route description
From the south, LA 3261 began at Lausat Street north of LA 3139 (Earhart Expressway) in Metairie. It continued north to a terminus at U.S. 61 (Airline Drive). On the north side of this intersection, Severn Avenue continues the route of Shrewsbury Road, and LA 611-9 branches to the east along Metairie Road (westbound via Johnson Street).
LA 3261 was an undivided, two-lane highway for its entire length.
History
LA 3261 was formerly part of LA 611-3 which originally included all of Shrewsbury Road between LA 611-1 (River Road) and U.S. 61 (Airline Drive). Shrewsbury Road was made discontinuous in June 1957 when the railroad crossing was closed following completion of the parallel Causeway Boulevard (LA 3046) overpass. The extension of the Earhart Expressway from Deckbar Ave. to Cleary Ave. in 1984 created a second barrier. In the 1990s, the section of Shrewsbury Road south of the expressway was retained as LA 611-3 while the section north of the expressway was designated as LA 3261.
The route of LA 3261 once carried a small piece of the Jefferson Highway (State Route 1 in the pre-1955 Louisiana highway system) and U.S. 61 until 1928-1929 when Jefferson Highway was extended along the Orleans-Kenner interurban streetcar right-of-way from Shrewsbury Road to the Protection Levee at South Claiborne Avenue. Shrewsbury Road then became part of State Route 454 until the 1955 Louisiana Highway renumbering.
Major intersections
The entire highway was in Metairie, Jefferson Parish.
