Mōryō Senki MADARA 2 (魍魎戦記 MADARA 2)[3] is a Japan-exclusive Super Famicom adventure video game based on the manga Madara. It is set partly in the 20th century and partly in medieval Japan.[1]
The player controls a teenager named Kamishiro and his girlfriend, Subaru, and they must explore an authentic shrine. While exploring, he is transported into an alternative universe full of creatures from Japanese mythology that he must help Madara (son of Emperor Miroku) defeat. Characters from the manga series that the video game is based on can be met including Madara's brother and his rival Kage-ou. Madara was reborn with artificial limbs after his body was cut into eight different parts for fear that he might live to kill his father.[1]
Gameplay
The player must attend school until he discovers the haunted shrine. After entering the haunted shrine, the game proceeds like a normal adventure game. All battles are automatically fought; the game has to literally paused in order to manually issue commands to the main characters. A third-person perspective with dynamic features is used for random encounters; characters can be seen moving around the battlefield looking for an opportunity to attack the enemies.[1]
Unlike most role-playing games, allowing the players' travelling party to get wiped out doesn't result in them losing half of their money. All items in the game are expensive to purchase; the most expensive weapon/armor ser in the game cost around 10,000 currency unit for each. Magic is very limited in this game and must be learned through special magic schools for a fee.[4]
Monsters include rats, blobs, and other nasty creatures. Talking to normal people on the street gives out clues that the player must piece together in order to solve the quest. Kamishiro can use swords that can deliver a moderate amount of damage to the rats and blobs that the player confronts near the beginning of the game.[1]
Automobiles are seen, but they cannot be driven during the course of the game.
