The Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball Tournament is the postseason single-elimination tournament for the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference (MAC). The winner of the tournament receives the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship. Each of the 12 women's basketball teams in the MAC are eligible for the tournament.
Format
The MAC announced a new format beginning with the 2012 Women's Basketball Tournament. With the new format, the No. 1 and 2 seeds will earn byes straight to the semifinals, with the No. 3 and 4 seeds beginning tournament play in the quarterfinals. Teams seeded 5-12 will have to play an additional two rounds, beginning with campus-site games. The MAC no longer automatically rewards a top 2 seed to the division winners. Teams are now seeded based on conference record, regardless of their place in their division — though no division champion is seeded lower than fourth.[1]
In the previous tournament format, teams were seeded per division by conference record using a series of specified tie-breakers when necessary. The top two seeds in each division received byes into the quarterfinals.
