Madeleine Marie Slavick is an American writer, poet, and photographer of German–American descent whose work is notable for crossing cultural barriers.[3] She is known as a Hong Kong expat poet.[3] As a founder of the Sixth Finger Press, she published Chinese poetry bilingually alongside English, and she helped bring poet Zheng Danyi to international attention.[3]
Slavick traveled widely, lived for many years in Hong Kong, and in recent years is based in Carterton, New Zealand. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally.[4] Reviewer Bradley Winteron in the Taipei Times described Slavik's Delicate Access as having "poise and a terse intelligence" with "nothing unbuttoned" and having a "minimalist concentration."[5] Reviewer Tammy Ho in the Asian Review of Books described her poetry as transforming small and "seemingly insignificant things" into "meaning-loaded symbols."[6] Reviewer Michael Ingham described her poem Mong kok Market, about life in Hong Kong, as depicting the "instant slaughter one cannot avoid witnessing at the live meat and fish stalls."[7] Slavik has stated, "In the projects I undertake, I try to create a sense of community which enriches me, the other participants, and the audience."[3]
