Mahatma Gandhi "International" School (MGIS) located in the commercial capital of Gujarat is a successful and award winning Public Private Partnership between educationalists Dr Pascal Chazot, Ms Anju Musafir, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Authorities to set up a landmark in quality education; a torch bearer of inclusive and progressive education for the city and the state.

Class work done by students as they cover the mandated curriculum through hands-on projects, has won national and international awards in recognition of the remarkable quality of work produced by the bright young minds of the students using innovative pedagogy, hands on project based learning, experiential and inclusive education and new technological tools.[1] MGIS is an award-winning school that consistently features prominently among the Top Schools in India and the Top School in Gujarat.[2]

Based in Mithakali, Ahmedabad, India, MGIS is the first authorized IB World School in Gujarat, having obtained that status in November 2002.[3] MGIS is also registered with the University of Cambridge International Examinations,[4] the Mission Laïque Française and Edexcel. The school enrolls approximately 300 students from the local community as well as expatriate children.[5]

The school is an award-wining Public Partnership. It was established in 1998 by Dr. Pascal Chazot and Anju Musafir in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.[6] The building in which the school is located was donated by Sheth Motilal Hirabhai.[7]

Although housed in a modest building compared to other International schools, MGIS offers high quality, state of the art resources to its students.[8] The school has video and audio editing and recording studio facilities using high performance Apple computers, Final cut pro, professional software, Drobo, iPads, Bose speakers, cameras, professional audio-visual equipment etc as well as a Computer & iPad Lab and three Science Labs which are fully equipped with Vernier equipment and IB mandated requirements.[9]

Every space is considered a learning resource at MGIS, continual innovation and strategies to make optimal use of the available resources within the learners surroundings, technology, human resources etc make for a dynamic, modular use of every available space. Students and teachers use the classroom walls, floor, tables, display boards, as well as the cohort of multifunctional spaces such as the science labs, audio visual room, the editing studio, the performance space, the playground, the library, the garden, the lobby etc to suit the pedagogical and communication requirements of the project. Learning spills over outside the classroom walls into spaces that are relevant and conducive for the students’ learning.[10]

Academics, Pedagogy and Extra-curricular Activities

The pedagogy is experiential, and utilizes the body, all five senses, space and movement as well as abstract thinking.[11] The teaching methodology includes tools such as the Apple Computers, iPad, filmmaking, coding, Cuisenaire Rods, Montessori material, theatre, multimedia, sports, technology etc to engage the learners with different learning styles and abilities. The subject areas are delivered through a concept based curriculum, and is nearly and totally integrated in a multi-disciplinary way through projects.[12] The pedagogy incorporates strategies from different movements: Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), art therapy, drama therapy, gestalt, yoga, technology infused teaching etc.[13] The body and the senses are an important tool and the classroom pedagogy incorporates this dimension for holistic learning. The teaching methodology promotes differential learning and multiple intelligences.

MGIS is authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation to offer the Middle Years Programme since November 2002 and the Diploma Programme since March 2005.[14] It was the first International School in Gujarat. MGIS is Gujarat’s first MYP and DP school. The school is also the most senior IB school in the state.

The school offers the Cambridge International Primary Programme for classes K-5, the IB MYP Programme for classes 6-10, the IB Diploma Programme for classes 11-12.[15] The school also offers a bilingual program affiliated to the Mission Laïque Française to interested K-12 students and a vocational course in filmmaking affiliated to Edexcel to classes 8-11.

Academic rigour, creativity and life skills are imparted to students. MGIS promotes internationalism in the curriculum and in its learning community, and has been consistently winning the International School Award conferred by British Council. The school encourages international exchange programmes. MGIS has a long standing association with other international schools in the world such as L'Ecole Aujourd'hui and Lycée Saint Germain en Laye from Paris and Mercedes College from Adelaide.[16][17][18]

MGIS was the first school in Ahmedabad to have boys and girls in the football team which was able to win against several other teams at the local and state levels, with many MGIS students qualifying in the National Team.[19][20]
