Mandhira Punnagai (Tamil: மந்திர புன்னகை),(English: Mystic Smile) is a 1986 Tamil film produced by Sathya Movies and directed by V Thamizhalagan. The film casts Sathyaraj in dual role- one as a Doctor and the other as a Police Inspector. The film with moderate reviews from the critics was moderately successful at the box office.[3]

Plot

The film has an intuitive story line with Sathyaraj enacting dual role for the first time in his career. The Doctor Sathyaraj appeared with moustache while the Police Office Sathyaraj appeared without moustache.Nadhiya also Played dual role on this movie, one is young college girl geetha and another is Daniel Miranda (Raghuvaran) wife sheela.

Story

The movie story moves to three different path ways. one is Sathyaraj and his daughter Baby sujitha Sentiment, second, Young college girl geetha(Nadhiya Moidu) love and she is faced many problem to her grandfather Thengai Srinivasan written will. and final the Gangster Daniel Miranda(Raghuvaran)terrorism.

A famous Cardiologist Dr.Baskar(Sathyaraj), he have one daughter suji(Baby Sujitha) and live with her. Dr.Baskar was drunken man and coming from home at midnight everyday. so. his daughter suji asked to her father one promise don't drink and spending time with her. So, Baskar was take oath hereafter his never drink . The same time his affect heart problem his not alive for many days. Geetha(Nadhiya) a young college girl loves her classmate mohan(Suresh). Geetha Grandfather Zamindar Srinivasan(Thengai Srinivasan) wrote will.After his period all property was goes to geetha, unfortunately she is dead this property goes Geetha cousin Ranjith(Jai Jagadish). So, he decided Murder by Geetha. Ranjith mixed poison to Geetha drinking milk, but milk colour was changed geetha knowns somebody trying to kill her. so, she was acting drama and admit in hospital. but Baskar was find she is perfect well. Then Geetha told truth to baskar somebody trying to kill her. Baskar was told lie to her grandfather srinivasan.but one ward boy comes to rajith home and says all truth.so, ranjith was get help for Dr.Baskar to murder with geetha perfectly. Ranjith was 5 lakhs cash give to Baskar, early his not agree the deal. but Baskar thinking about after dead his daughter future. Then After Baskar agree the condition and brought advance money. The next day baskar was daughter suji join with Child Care Home and leave him. Sathyaraj and Baby Suji comes Sentimental song "Manthira Punnagaiyo Manjal Nilavo" singing by S. Janaki. Baskar kidnapping Geetha and kept at safe place to her. So, the kidnapping doubt was turning into Gangster Daniel Miranda(Raghuvaran). Miranda was terrorist activity against the village. His Gang was Robbery money and raped the girls. Miranda was shocked Geetha in TV. Because Geetha was similar to Miranda's wife sheela. The police was planned encounter with Miranda and get targeting Miranda but unfortunately the bullet hit sheela. so she was dead the Gun Shooting.And the Kidnapping case file under D. S. P. Arunachalam(Sathyaraj) without mustache. Geetha was many time try to escape with Baskar. Baskar briefly explained to Geetha for his plan and his health condition. so, Geetha was promise to him, after solving all problems baskar daughter suji take care for herself. Ranjith and Baskar was fight, because ranjith was known geetha not killed baskar, she is alive. so, he was fight against baskar. Miranda gang was killed ranjith and caught baskar and geetha for under custody. Miranda(Raghuvaran) asked to geetha was getting married to him. but she is not accepted, then miranda was black mail to suji and baskar. So, geetha agreed to marriage but Miranda was release to Baskar and his daughter Suji for Safely. Miranda accepted for her request and released them. At night time Geetha was black mail to Miranda shown front of gun, but Miranda was explain to geetha bullets not inside the revolver. Miranda was close to her and try to molest. Baskar was asked helped to D.S.P.Arunachalam and Basker Shown Miranda hidden place. The police force was surrounding Miranda. Miranda for fight against Baskar. and Miranda Gangs all are death. Miranda was fallen to fire and burn.t Then Miranda Standing in try to Shoot geetha but Baskar was saves geetha. but his dead. Then Geetha and Suresh was married. suji was carrying Geetha and D.S.P.Arunachalam.

Reception

The film received mostly mixed reviews from the critics but due to its promotion and intuitive story line managed to become successful at the box office. Behindwoods reported that this film gave Sathyaraj a strong foothold as a solo hero in Tamil industry. Earlier he was doing supportive and villain roles but with this film, he established himself as a solo hero at the same time continued to shine in villain roles too. Raghuvaran's powerful performance as the villain Daniel Miranda helped the film a lot.
