Mario Shabow is an Australian professional football player. Born in Iraq, he is of Assyrian ethnicity.[1] He currently plays for the Western Sydney Wanderers[2] and the Australia U20[3][4] National Football Team.
Early life
Mario Shabow was born in Baghdad, Iraq. At the age of six his family immigrated to Australia in 2004 due to the unsettled war torn country. As a teenager he attended Hoxton Park High school and played for the juniors Liverpool Olympic local soccer team.As the years followed Mario developed into a talented footballer. He was chosen to represent NSW in the Futsal National championships, as well as playing futsal since he was 10 for premier league club Sydney City Eagles[5] He gained more experience playing for the Marconi Stallions and Blacktown City FC competing in the NSW National Premier League where he attracted attention from various A league clubs.
Western Sydney Wanderers
From the inaugural season when the Western Sydney Wanderers were established in 2012,Shabow was a supporter of the Wanderers attending friendlies and A league matches played home and away. While playing for Blacktown city shabow was called up for the friendly pre season games with the wanderers. In 2014 Shabow was named in the Western Sydney Wanderers Youth squad,he immediately made an impact in assisting and scoring goals which caught the attention of senior wanderers Head coach Tony Popovic.[6]
Mario made his National Youth League debut against Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners, proving his good form he was called up for the first team in round 8 for the 2015/2016 A Leauge season. On 29 November 2015, Shabow made his senior club debut as substitute coming on in the 80th minute for Romeo Castelen away to the Central Coast Mariners.[7][8]
On 11 May 2016, Western Sydney Wanderers signed Shabow on a one-year senior contract becoming one of the first players to join from the Wanderers Youth Academy for the 2016-2017 A League Season.[9]
Australia Under 20
As a Western Sydney Wanderers[10][11] youth team player, In 2015 Shabow was selected to represent the young Socceroos upon being eligible to play for his heritage country of Iraq for the AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers which were held in Laos. In his second appearance for the young socceroos he scored a second half goal which earned them a 2–0 win over Laos.[4]
AFF & AFC U19 Championships
On September 2016, shabow was selected in the squad for the 2016 AFF U-19 Youth Championship,which were held in Vietnam. He helped the team with goals against Indonesia and Vietnam in the group stages as the young socceroos triumphed to the final with a 5-1 win over Thailand.[12]
Shabow was again named in squad for the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship. In their opening game against china, shabow scored a goal giving the young socceroos a 1-0 victory. Having only won one game, the team did not progress past the group stages of the competition exiting out on goal differnce with a 2-3 loss to Uzbekistan and a 0-0 draw with Tajikistan.[13]
