Playing career

He was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 8th round (251st overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.[1]

McIlvane played on the Ohio State Buckeyes men's ice hockey team from 2004 to 2008 and served as team captain his senior season. He played a total of 156 games for the Buckeyes, with 15 goals and 37 assists.[2]

In 2007-08, he made four appearances for Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League,[3] before signing with German DEL side Eisbären Berlin in late August 2008.[4] However, his 2008-09 season was cut short when he tore his cruciate ligament in November.[5]

Between 2009 and 2012, he played for the Bloomington PrairieThunder of the Central Hockey League, the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League and for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL.

On October 25, 2011, it was announced that McIlvane had retired from professional hockey citing health reasons.[6]

Coaching career

In December 2011, he was named head coach and general manager of the Danville Dashers of the Federal Hockey League in 2011-12,[7] followed by a stint as assistant coach for the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL[8] in 2012-13.

On August 6, 2013, McIlvane was appointed assistant coach of EC Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Hockey League. In Salzburg he worked under head coach Don Jackson who he played for at Berlin during the 2008-09 campaign.[9]

In June 2014, he accepted another position as assistant coach under Don Jackson, signing with EHC München of the German top-tier Deutsche Eishockey Liga.[10]
