Mayo University Hospital is a hospital situated in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland, serving County Mayo. The emergency department (A&E) has an attendance of 35,000 patients per year. Mayo University Hospital has a total of 306 inpatient beds across the specialities of general surgery, general medicine, orthopaedics, gynaecology, paediatrics, intensive/coronary care, obstetrics, radiology, pathology, anaesthetics, palliative care and emergency medicine.

Mayo Medical Academy developed in partnership with NUI Galway and GMIT for training of doctors. Centre of Nurse and Midwifery Education at GMIT Castlebar.

The hospital recently underwent a name change from Mayo General Hospital to Mayo University Hospital.

Notable patients

Eithne Kenny, mother of Taoiseach Enda Kenny and wife of Henry Kenny, died here at the age of 93 on 26 November 2011. Actor Robert Shaw also died here on August 28, 1978 after suffering a heart attack at the side of the road several miles from the hospital [1][2] Sir Ernst Boris Chain, born on 19 June 1906 Died in Mayo General hospital on 12 August 1979). He was a German-born British biochemist, and a 1945 co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on penicillin
