Medknow provides publishing services for peer-reviewed, online and print-plus-online journals in medicine on behalf of learned societies and associations with a focus on emerging markets. Medknow is a product line within Wolters Kluwer’s Health Division, and is part of Wolters Kluwer India, Pvt Ltd.

History

Founded in 1997 in Mumbai, India by Dr Devkumar Sahu with a promise to provide solutions for the scientific publishing community, Medknow’s mission is to help medical societies disseminate research, thus supporting the transformation of research into knowledge. Dr Sahu adopted the Open access (OA) model of publishing services, providing unrestricted online access to peer-reviewed scholarly research. In 2006, Medknow had 33 scientific technical & medical journals to its portfolio, at the time, one of the largest open access publisher of medical content in the world.[1]

Medknow’s first online venture, the Journal of Post Graduate Medicine from India (jpgmonline.com), grew from a 2001 print circulation of 300-400, to an estimated 4,000 visitors per day. Most of the international readers were from the US and Europe, and from leading US academic research institutions including Harvard. Medknow hosted its first editorial conference at KEM Hospital, Mumbai-India in September 2004. In 2005, Medknow signed its first international journal entitled, Annals of Thoracic Medicine. By 2010, Medknow celebrated its 100th journal added to its portfolio.

Medknow was acquired by Wolters Kluwer in December 2011, and has continued to grow its journal portfolio, extending its publishing partnerships in China, the Middle East, and other high growth markets. Today, Medknow provides publishing services to over 370 medical society journals in over 40 specialties.[2]
