Memphis is a census-designated place (CDP) in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,264 at the 2000 census. It is part of the BradentonSarasotaVenice Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Memphis is located at 27°32′23″N 82°33′47″W / 27.53972°N 82.56306°W / 27.53972; -82.56306 (27.539798, -82.562966).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 7,264 people, 2,501 households, and 1,835 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,297.1 people per square mile (887.5/km²). There were 2,832 housing units at an average density of 895.6/sq mi (346.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 48.21% White, 41.89% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 7.81% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.10% of the population.

There were 2,501 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% were married couples living together, 19.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.26.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,576, and the median income for a family was $35,600. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $21,979 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,778. About 16.5% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.5% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
