Michael Mamas (born October 8, 1950 in Columbus, Ohio) is a writer, lecturer, spiritual scholar, and the founder of Sri Somesvara Temple and Mount Soma, a 448-acre non-denominational retreat and destination center, near Asheville, North Carolina.

Throughout his 35-year teaching career, Mamas has taught in the United States, India, Europe and Canada. Mamas is a diverse author of books in the field of spirituality, with nine publications in total ranging from non-fiction to a children’s storybook. He was also the first person from the West to receive this title from the East: "Adhyatma Vidhya Visharad" (Master of the Highest Spiritual Knowledge, the deepest awakening of the Self).

Early life & education

Mamas studied at Ohio State University where he was a double major honors student in Physics and Mathematics from 1968 to 1971. He graduated from the university in 1975 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. A decade later, he graduated with Master of Business Administration from Maharishi International University in 1985.[1]

At the age of 21, Mamas began his Eastern studies with his teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder, leader, and guru of the Transcendental Meditation Movement.[2] During and after that time, out of his interest in spirituality and the healing arts, Mamas visited a number of saints and healers in various countries.[3][4]

Career

Mamas created a new approach to personal evolution that differs from most alternative and traditional approaches.[5][6] Mamas' work helps individuals to evolve by supporting the natural development of their consciousness.[7] This is done by teaching the Surya Ram Meditation,[8] integrating ancient spiritual wisdom with modern rational thought, and helping people move beyond their current level of spiritual understanding.[9][10]

In 2007, Mamas became the first person from the West to be awarded the title "Adhyatma Vidhya Visharad" (Master of the Highest Spiritual Knowledge, the deepest awakening of the Self) from Bhagavan Yagnyavalkya Ved Tatavagyan Yogashram, the Sanskrit College at Gujarat University.[11] Mamas also founded the non-profit, The Center of Rational Spirituality.[12]

Mamas additionally founded Sri Somesvara Temple (consecrated in 2011) located at Mount Soma, a retreat and destination center founded by Mamas in 2002.[13][14]

Mamas is a frequent contributor to Entrepreneur.com,[15][16][17] The Huffington Post[18][19][20] and Elephant Journal.[21][22][23]
