Mike Avery (born September 19, 1968) is an American soccer coach.

Playing career

Avery played college soccer for Westmont College in California between 1986 and 1989. Playing for the Warriors he appeared in three NAIA national tournaments. He was honored with two honorable mention NAIA All-American selections and was a four times All-Conference player. In 1989 he was named an All-District player.[1][2][3]

In 1990 he turned professional, playing for Real Santa Barbara in the American Professional Soccer League. He later appeared for Askims IK in the Swedish Division 2.[1]

Player coach

He returned to the United States as a player-coach of the Indiana Invaders in the USL Premier Development League.[1]

College coaching

In the early 1990s he worked for Midwestern State University as an assistant coach.[4]

In 1994 he began his college head coaching career at Bethel College in Indiana, where he compiled a 43-20-6 record in three seasons. In 1996, he guided the team to an 18-4-2 mark, giving him league coach of the year honors.

He moved to California State University, San Bernardino where his role as director of soccer involved coaching both the men's and women's soccer teams.[5]

From 2000 to 2005, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame.[6] [7] He later served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville in 2006 under Ken Lolla.

Avery joined Valparaiso University in January 2007 as men's college soccer coach. He led the Crusaders to a third-place finish in the Horizon League in 2009, and a 10-7-2 overall record.[1]

In 2008 Avery walked 1000 miles in an effort to raise money for the Valparaiso soccer team.[5][8]
