The Death Busters (デスバスターズ Desu Basutāzu) are a group of fictional characters who serve as antagonists in the Sailor Moon manga series written by Naoko Takeuchi. This group comprises the antagonists of the third major story arc, which is called the "Infinity" arc in the manga and Sailor Moon S in the anime. They are first introduced in chapter #24 "Infinity 1 – Premonition", originally published in Japan on July 7, 1994.[1] In the Cloverway English adaptation, they are called the "Heart Snatchers".
The goal of the Death Busters is the resurrection of Mistress 9 in order to bring the alien creature Pharaoh 90 to Earth, which would wipe out all life in an event known as the Silence. The group is led by Professor Tomoe, a mad scientist, assisted by a woman named Kaolinite. They employ the Witches 5 to help carry out their schemes. Their base of operations is Infinity Academy (無限学園 Mugen Gakuen), founded by Tomoe with Kaolinite being the principal.

Professor Tomoe
Professor Souichi Tomoe (土萠 創一 Tomoe Sōichi) is the leader of the Death Busters and Hotaru Tomoe's father.
Originally a scientist, Tomoe was forced out of the scientific community for inappropriate experiments. After selling some of these findings, he purchases the area where he builds his labs and Infinity Academy. He continues with his research but a lightning strike causes a fire there, which kills his wife Keiko and leaves his daughter Hotaru badly injured. Souichi saves his daughter by making what appears to be a cybernetic body and making a deal with Master Pharaoh 90. In exchange, he also loses his humanity and becomes malevolent. He implants the Daimon Egg of Mistress 9 in Hotaru at this time; the eggs having arrived with Pharaoh 90 during the lightning strike. They infect his assistant, Kaori, as well as himself. After this Tomoe focuses on the creation of his "Super Beings," using a variety of scientific techniques. Human bodies are used as vessels, but he also makes several Daimons from the eggs alone: the Witches 5. When Super Sailor Moon arrives at his lab with the Outer Soldiers, Daimons attack and Tomoe changes into a creature called Germatoid (ゲルマトイド Gerumatoido). Sailor Moon kills him with Rainbow Moon Heart Ache, and Hotaru is briefly seen saying goodbye to her father, whom she realizes has disappeared a long time ago, after her mother's death.
In the anime, Professor Tomoe first appears in episode 90 of the anime. As in the manga, his wife is killed and Hotaru severely injured in an explosion at his laboratory, and he allows himself to be possessed by Germatoid (who is a separate entity in this continuity), and Hotaru to be possessed by Mistress 9. He does not die like in the manga, but lives after the end of Sailor Moon S. After the battle with Pharaoh 90 and Hotaru's rebirth, Professor Tomoe is left with no memory of his past. Baby Hotaru is left in his care until the season premiere of Sailor Stars, when Setsuna Meioh comes to retrieve her, and after that he is not seen again in the series.
Professor Tomoe appears in several musicals. In the Last Dracul arc, his body is possessed by an alchemist known as Undead Berserk (アンデッド・ベルセルク Andeddo Beruseruku). Using Tomoe's laboratory, Berserk tries to create perfect homunculi in order to replace human beings; however, his first homunculi, the Death Mannetjes, turned out to be flawed creatures. Although Tomoe is possessed by Berserk, the latter shows concern for Hotaru.
Professor Tomoe is voiced by Akira Kamiya in Sailor Moon S and by Takuya Kirimoto in Crystal. In the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation produced in association with Optimum Productions, he is voiced by Jeff Lumby. In the Viz Media English adaptation, he is voiced by Keith Silverstein. In the musicals, he has been portrayed by Shunsaku Yajima, Ryuuji Kasahara, Kaname Aoki and Yuuki Kaon.
Kaolinite
Kaolinite (カオリナイト Kaorinaito) is the loyal assistant of Professor Tomoe, and is also greatly infatuated with him. She first appears in Act 24 of the manga and Episode 90 of the anime. She is named after the mineral of the same name.
She becomes Kaolinite after being struck by random lightning during a chaotic storm that occurred as the pair attempted to reconstruct the maimed body of his daughter Hotaru. Her title is "Magus Kaolinite", Magus being a position that all of the Witches 5 aspire to reach. The privileges of the Magus position includes the use of the Tau Star System's Crystal and direct contact with Master Pharaoh 90. It is Kaolinite, not Tomoe, to whom the Witches 5 answer. She sees them in no way other than servants, demonstrating annoyance when Mimet appeals to her for help. It is implied that she wishes to be Pharaoh 90's partner in place of Mistress 9. When Mistress 9 does awaken, she orders Kaolinite to eliminate the Sailor Soldiers. She succeeds in subduing the Guardian Soldiers, however, they are freed by Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Reunited, the Soldiers confront Kaolinite, and she transforms into a Daimon. Ultimately, she is destroyed by Super Sailor Moon's Rainbow Moon Heartache attack.
In the anime adaptation, she is the first of the Death Busters to openly attack people who possess pure heart crystals, using the bio-engineered Daimons she helped create. Her goal is to find the three Talismans. Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter are all targeted by her Daimons. In episode 102, she discovers the brightness of Sailor Moon's Pure Heart Crystal and goes after it. The Sailor Soldiers rally against her, and she is subsequently defeated by Sailor Uranus, falling from the Tokyo Tower apparently to her death. However, it is later revealed that Tomoe had managed to revive her. She appears as Hotaru's guardian,[2] but she feels that her place has mostly been filled by the Witches 5, and is jealous of them as well as Hotaru. In episode 123 she steals Chibiusa's Pure Heart. The crystal is ingested by Hotaru's possessed form, and she awakens as Mistress 9. The last words Kaolinite hears are congratulations from Tomoe, before she is thrown into an electrified wall by Mistress 9 for "having served her purpose."
The stage musicals follow the manga version, though no mention of what was occurring at the time of the lightning strike is made, and the event is not shown, only mentioned. The musicals imply Kaori to be her original name, as she is always addressed as Kaori-Kun in Hotaru's presence by Professor Tomoe who states she has been helping them out since, at least, his wife's death. In Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi, she leads another set of minions, the Death Nightmares.
In Sailor Moon S, she is voiced by Noriko Uemura. In Crystal, she is voiced by Hikari Yono. In the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation, her name is changed to Kaorinite (though she retains her original name in her second incarnation) and is voiced by Kirsten Bishop. In the Viz Media English adaptation, she is voiced by Tara Platt. In the musicals, Kaolinite is played by Keiko Hanayama, Mutsumi Fukuma, and Miki Kawasaki.
Mistress 9
Mistress 9 (ミストレス9 Misutoresu Nain) is a malevolent entity from "Tau Ceti Star System" who has come to Earth to help open a gateway for Pharaoh 90, her master and partner. She is called the "Messiah of Silence," her true form being a gigantic monster with a ghoulish head and an indistinct body. When Pharaoh 90 first contacts Professor Tomoe as he is reconstructing his daughter Hotaru's body, he and Kaolinite receive an Daimon Egg that contains Mistress 9. He implanted it within Hotaru's body; the consequences of this for Hotaru are a permanently frail physical state and seizures. When Mistress 9 overpowers Hotaru's body, it becomes that of a grown woman with long hair. After the death of all her servants, Mistress 9 is confronted by the Sailor Soldiers after gaining Chibiusa's Silver Crystal. She then attempts to leaves Hotaru's body while conducting the ritual to summon Pharaoh 90 to Earth. But Mistress 9 is surprised to find that Hotaru's soul still exists and is inhibiting the entity from leaving her body. Nonetheless, Mistress 9 swallows the souls of the Guardian Soldiers whereupon Hotaru retrieves their Heart Crystals along with that of Chibiusa and escapes to return them to their owners. While she is doing this, Mistress 9 is able to leave Hotaru's body, ripping it apart in the process. She absorbs all of the Soldiers' attacks and complete opening the door for Pharaoh 90, who begins to smother the planet. Mistress 9 is assimilated into Pharaoh 90, but Sailor Saturn appears and attacks both Mistress 9 and Pharaoh 90, so they both rise into the sky to escape back to Tau. Saturn follows them and Sailor Pluto seals the door forever, assuring that Mistress 9 and Pharaoh 90 can never reach Earth again.
In the anime, Tomoe allows Mistress 9 to possess Hotaru's body after a freak accident kills her. Mistress 9 occasionally controls Hotaru, using her to communicate with the Death Busters. Eventually, Mistress 9 steals Chibiusa's Heart Crystal and transforms Hotaru's body into an adult-like form while killing Kaolinite for serving her purpose. Mistress 9 attempts to use a large machine to guide Pharaoh 90 to Earth so that he may destroy it. Sailor Moon tries to stop her and Tomoe, now freed from Germatoid, attempts to reach her, still seeing her as Hotaru. She attacks both of them but is injured by energy emanating from the machine. Tomoe takes her in his arms and Hotaru's spirit begins to respond. Mistress 9 attempts to subdue her once again but Hotaru's memories of both her father and of Chibiusa prove to be overpowering. The black star insignia on her forehead shatters, revealing the sign of Saturn beneath it. Mistress 9's body then vaporizes, leaving Sailor Saturn in its place.
In Sailor Moon S, Mistress 9's voice is provided by Yuko Minaguchi and Yukiyo Fujii provides her voice in Crystal. In the Cloverway Inc. English dub, she is played by Susan Aceron. In the Viz Media English dub, she is voiced by Christine Marie Cabanos. In the musicals two actresses have played her: Tomoko Inami and Chinatsu Akiyama.
Master Pharaoh 90
Master Pharaoh 90 (
Pharaoh 90's goal is to merge itself with the planet Earth in a process referred to as "the utilization". To do this, it requires Mistress 9 to open the gateway between the Tau System and Earth. It communicates regularly with Professor Tomoe and Kaolinite through a reflecting pool concealed at the top of the Infinity Academy. When it first appears, it is dependent on the Taioron Crystal, the life source of the Tau System. The Crystal is losing its power, presumably due to Pharaoh 90's presence, but it identifies a replacement in the Silver Crystal. Mistress 9 is able to open the gateway and Pharaoh 90 begins to cover the Earth; Sailor Moon describes its form as that of "black lava reeking of death".[3] It is energized by the attacks the individual Soldiers use on it and in a last-ditch attempt, Sailor Moon throws herself into its mass with the Legendary Holy Grail and the Silver Crystal with the intent of unleashing the full power of both while inside of it. Her maneuver seems to cause a reaction in the three Talismans of the Outer Soldiers and they summon Sailor Saturn. Saturn's "Death Reborn Revolution" drains Pharaoh 90's energy and it attempts to escape back to the Tau System, along with Mistress 9. Sailor Pluto then uses "Dark Dome Close" to seal the gateway, permanently locking Pharaoh 90 away from Earth. Like all of the head villains in the manga, Pharaoh 90 is later revealed to be an incarnation of Chaos, the ultimate enemy of the series.
In Sailor Moon S, Pharaoh 90 appears as a huge, black eyeball-like sphere with tentacles. It wants simply to destroy Earth by bringing about the "Silence". Pharaoh 90 is the one who provided the Daimon egg of Mistress 9 to Tomoe, taking advantage of Tomoe's desire to save his daughter. In reality, Pharaoh 90 simply needed to provide a body for Mistress 9 so that she, in turn, could open a portal for Pharaoh 90. When the portal is opened, it appears on Earth but Sailor Moon (empowered by the other Soldiers) and the newly awakened Sailor Saturn defeat it.
He is voiced by Takaya Hashi in Crystal. In the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation, his vocal effects are provided by Jeff Lumby.
Witches 5
The Witches 5 (ウィッチーズ５ Witchīzu Faibu) is a subset of the Death Busters led by Kaolinite. Like many Sailor Moon villains, each name is based on the name of a mineral or gemstone.
The Witches 5 make only brief appearances before being killed off. They pose as students at Infinity Academy, the Death Busters' home base. They each carry a staff and have a specific rank. Their goal is to remove the souls, or "Hostes," of innocent victims so they could use their bodies, or Vessels, to plant Daimon eggs. They are seen as either being equal to or stronger than the Guardian Soldiers, but not as strong as the Outer Soldiers.
In the anime, the Witches 5 are led by Professor Tomoe and work as researchers in an underground lab. At first Tomoe hires them to search for the Talismans, but they are later instructed by Mistress 9 to find "pure hearts" instead. Each tries to win Tomoe's approval, but each fails. The door to their office is labeled "Witches 5" (or 4, or 3, as each member dies). In the Cloverway English adaptation, the name is changed to Bureau of Bad Behavior.
Eudial
Eudial (ユージアル Yūjiaru) is the first of the Witches 5, appearing as a red-haired humanoid. Eudialyte is her namesake. She fancies the color red because eudialytes have a different shade of red.
She goes by the alias Yuko Arimura (有村ゆうこ Arimura Yūko) and teaches the etiquette class in the Philosophy Division of Infinity Academy. Her rank is Level 78. She leads some students to "Mount M" for a retreat and tries to remove their Hostes during orientation. However, Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter fight her. Sailor Mars uses her "Mars Snake Fire" technique on Eudial but it turns her into a monster looking similar to a Gorgon with a black star on its forehead. She is the first one killed by Sailor Moon. Although never used in the manga, her strongest attack (according to the Materials Collection) is called "Fire Buster." When Kaolinite revives the Witches 5, Eudial was chosen to fight Sailor Mars.
In the anime, Eudial seems to be the oldest of the group, and is much resented by the others — particularly Mimete — because Professor Tomoe seems to favor her. She is referred to as Chief by the other members. Eudial is generally fairly even-tempered and level-headed; however, she is also portrayed as a reckless driver. A brilliant inventor, she is able to construct and jury rig weaponry and computer technology through the use of everyday items, like her deadly shoulder-mounted flamethrower, the Fire Buster, and later in the series booby-traps the under-construction Marine Cathedral. Eudial actually succeeds in getting two of the Talismans, but loses them to Sailor Pluto. She uses the Fire Buster to try to attack Super Sailor Moon, but she deflects it back to her. Furious, she escapes in her car, only to find that Mimete has torn out its brakes and filled it with snails. The car crashes through a barrier into the sea below, killing her instantly.
Voice actor Maria Kawamura provides her voice for the original Japanese production and Chiaki Takahashi voices her in Crystal. Canadian actress Loretta Jafelice does her voice for the Cloverway English adaptation, in which her name is changed to "Eugeal". In the Viz Media English adaptation, she is voiced by Erin Fitzgerald. In the musicals, she is played by Hitomi Tsumura and Saya Chinen.
Mimete
Mimete (ミメット Mimetto) is the second of the group, who is named after the mineral mimetite. An orange-haired humanoid, she is also known as Mimi Hanyu (羽生美々 Hanyū Mimi) and leads the acting class in the Arts Division of Infinity Academy. She is the lowest ranked, at Level 40, and her attack is "Charm Buster". She poses as a pop idol, holding a concert for Infinity Academy students with the intention of stealing their Hostes. Sailor Venus, who disguises herself as an Infinity Academy student, appears to stop her. When the other Soldiers arrive, Mimete calls on Kaolinite's help to awaken the Daimon eggs implanted in the students, but to no avail. She is killed by Sailor Uranus. When the Witches 5 are revived by Kaolinite, Mimete is chosen to fight Sailor Venus.
In the anime adaptation, Mimete is assigned to collect pure hearts after the death of Eudial. Mimete is a bit of a ditz and usually goes after attractive celebrities, flirting with them. Out of all the Witches 5, she is the least organized and the most easily distracted. She can launch mirages in the shape of stars at her opponents and induces severe vertigo and disorientation, capable of rendering someone unconscious in seconds. After several failed attempts at collecting hearts, she tries to use one of Eudial's abandoned inventions (Witches Electric Warp). The machine would transport a person inside of a television, which would increase that person's power exponentially. However, if the power to the television were disconnected while the user was still inside, the user would be trapped within it forever (the exact reason why Eudial never used it). Tellu mercilessly imprisons Mimete by pulling the plug on the machine.
In the original anime, she is voiced by Mika Kanai and in Crystal, she is voiced by Yuki Nagaku. Catherine Disher provides her voice in the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation, in which her name is changed to "Mimet". In the Viz Media English adaptation, she is voiced by Kira Buckland. In the musicals, she is played by Shiori Honda and Aki Kudou.
Viluy
Viluy (ビリユイ Biriyui) is the third member of the Witches 5, appearing as a white-haired humanoid and named for the mineral viluite. She uses the alias of top student Yui Bidoh (美堂ゆい Bidō Yui). She was ranked at Level 202 and taught the computer class of the Science Division of Infinity Academy. Her magical attack is called "Mosaic Buster." She programmed all the computers at Infinity Academy to extract the Hostes of their users during a national practice exam. She uses nano machines against Sailor Mercury, but she ends up being killed by Sailor Uranus' Space Sword. After Kaolinite revives her servants, Viluy is chosen to fight Sailor Mercury.
In the anime, Viluy is handed the task of gathering pure hearts after Tellu's death. She collects the pure hearts from the students using a supercomputer, controlled by her wristband. She overpowers Sailors Mercury, Uranus and Neptune using nano machines controlled by her wristband. Sailor Moon damages Viluy's wristband, and the nano machines turn on her, killing her.
Viluy also appears in the stage musicals. She is voiced by Yoshino Takamori in the original anime and by Rina Hon'izumi in Crystal. In the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation, her names were changed to "Byruit" and "Julie Bidoh" and is voiced by Susan Aceron. In the Viz Media English adaptation, she is voiced by Julie Ann Taylor. In the musicals, she is played by Nao Futatsugi, Yuka Kuwahara and Yui Hasegawa.
Tellu
Tellu (テルル Teruru) is the green-haired fourth member of the Witches 5, named for the mineral tellurite. She goes by the alias Lulu Teruno (照野留々 Teruno Ruru) and is in charge of the botany class in the Physical Division of Infinity Academy, as well as the school gardens. She is ranked at the significantly higher Level 404, and her death attack is "Mandragora Buster." She uses a number of artificial plants to steal Hostes, but is foiled by the Sailor Soldiers. When she deflects Sailor Moon's attack and Sailor Chibi Moon's "Pink Sugar Heart Attack", Tellu transforms into a monster, but the newly re-awakened Sailor Pluto kills her. When Kaolinite revives the Witches 5, Tellu is chosen to fight Sailor Jupiter.
In the anime, she appears as the third member of the Witches 5. After condemning Mimet to an eternity of imprisonment via Eudial's Witches Electric Warp, she is assigned the task of gathering pure hearts. She approaches this by opening a flower shop and giving away beautiful plants, Telluns, which will later wrestle the pure hearts out of their owners. Sailor Moon, Chibi Moon, Pluto, and Tuxedo Mask eventually confront her, and she unleashes her most destructive plant, Hyper-Tellun. In midst of the brawl, Tuxedo Mask hurls one of his trademark roses at her, which causes the container to burst open, surrounding Tellu with pure heart crystals. Sensing this, her own botanical creation turns against her. Tellu electrocutes it in an attempt to break free, but it self-destructs, dragging her with it.
She was voiced by Chieko Honda until episode 31 of Sailor Moon S. In Crystal, she is voiced by Naomi Ozora. In the Cloverway Inc. English adaptation, her name is changed to "Telulu" and is voiced by Kirsten Bishop. In the Viz Media English adaptation, she is voiced by Laura Post. In the musicals, she is played by Mio Nunokawa, Akiko Iwasaki and Momoko Sadachi.
Cyprine and Ptilol
Cyprine (シプリン Shipurin) and Ptilol (プチロル Puchiroru) are, together, considered the fifth of the Witches 5. In the Materials Collection, author Naoko Takeuchi states that Ptilol is just an extension of Cyprine's power, yet they seem to act as one. The two are named for the minerals cyprine and clinoptilolite. Cyprine and Ptilol appear identical except that Cyprine has blue hair and eyes, a braid with a bun on top on the right side of her head and dresses in blue, while Ptilol has red hair and eyes, a braid with a bun on top on the left side of her head and dresses in red.
Cyprine is the highest ranking witch at level 999, and her death attack is "Ribbon Buster." She was called upon by Kaolinite specifically to take care of the Sailor Soldiers. She comes from the sorcery class of the Business Division of Infinity Academy. After an unsuccessful attack on Haruka, Cyprine uses her powers to manipulate the dark feelings in the hearts of the Soldiers so they might fight each other. Sailor Moon manages to kill them only by transforming into Super Sailor Moon and using her "Rainbow Moon Heartache" attack.
In the anime, Cyprine was portrayed as the last of the Witches 5. It was only when confronted that she revealed her "other self", Ptilol, and remarking they are one mind in two bodies. The two prove nearly invincible to the Sailor Soldiers, as one always blocks incoming attacks with her powers while the other blasts from behind. In addition, they can absorb the powers of the Soldiers into their staff and increase the strength of their next attack. Gradually, the Soldiers are able to trick the two into blasting each other after Sailor Mercury uses her Bubble Spray attack to obscure their vision, killing both at the same time by filling their staffs with an excess of power.
In Sailor Moon S, Yuriko Fuchizaki did the voice of Cyprine and Rumi Kasahara did the voice of Ptilol. In Crystal, they are both voiced by Umeka Shōji. Susan Aceron voiced both of them in the Cloverway Inc. English version, in which their names are changed to "Cyprin" and "Petirol". In the Viz Media English adaptation, both Cyprine and Ptilol are voiced by Dorothy Elias-Fahn. In the musicals, only Cyprine has made an appearance, and she is played by Michiho Matsumoto, Saeri Amano and Maana.
Servants
Death Mannetjes
The Death Mannetjes (デス・マネッチャーズ Desu Manecchāzu) are servants of Professor Tomoe in the musicals Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi, Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi, and its revision. They are four men portrayed as thinking highly of themselves and as masters of disguise. The Mannetjes are tasked with finding the talismans, and are rivals of Kaolinite's own set of minions: the Death Nightmares. They are killed by the Sailor Soldiers, but are revived by Sailor Moon at the end of the musical. Their leader is Death Ra, and other members include Death Ri, Death Ru and Death Debu Re. They are respectively played by Ryuuji Kasahara, Masakazu Idono, Masayuki Ozaki, and Kouhei Kowada.
The Death Mannetjes appear in the Last Dracul musical. They are homunculi created by Undead Berserk while he takes over Tomoe's body and laboratory. They have no relation to the Death Busters in this version. The Mannetjes have different names in this continuity: Death Pa, Death Pi, Death Pu and Death Pe. They are respectively portrayed by Jun Kanzaki, Seiko Takuma, Takashi Kashiwagi and Yoshiya Yukimura.
Death Nightmares
The Death Nightmares (デス・ナイトメア Desu Naitomea) are nameless servants of Kaolinite the musical Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi. They are portrayed as beautiful, seductive women with silver hair, and have a rivalry with the Death Manntjes in the heart snatching. They use a Daimon named Gondola to steal Chibiusa's pure crystal heart, but they are stopped by Sailors Uranus and Neptune, and later killed by the Soldiers, only to be revived by Sailor Moon at the end of the musical. They are played by Kaori Ishikawa, Ado Endou, Yuuko Matsumoto, Eri Ikemoto, Hisako Doubayashi, Yoshiko Nakahara, and Junko Oyama.
In the Last Dracul musical, they are female dream demons, appearing again as beautiful and seductive women but with dark hair. Some of them are named in this arc: Olam Tiphareth, Roi Malkuth, and Elyon Yesod; however, there are other unnamed members. They have no relation to the Death Busters in this version. The Last Dracul Death Nightmares are portrayed by Miki Kawasaki, Ado Endou, Noriko Yamakawa, Junko Yamauchi, and Izumi Ogino.
Daimons
The Daimons (ダイモーン Daimōn) are monsters deployed by the Death Busters to carry out several tasks. In the manga, most Daimons are identical and are contained within Infinity Academy students who have pledged their souls to the Death Busters and can be released at Kaolinite's word. They are generally employed as an initial line of attack by the Death Busters upon confrontation by the Sailor Soldiers. Most of the Death Busters are considered perfect Daimons due to the fact that they retained human appearances and have full control over the host's bodies.
In the anime, Daimons serve as monsters-of-the-day (in the English dub, they are varyingly called "Heart Snatchers", "Daimons", "Daimon Heart Snatchers", or "Demonaes"). These life forms are bred in special pods known as Daimon Eggs that release monsters from the most mundane of objects, and are employed by Kaolinite and the Witches 5. Appearing as red liquid humanoids, Daimons can possess a certain object to assume a unique form based on that object. Kaolinite's set of Daimons randomly possess objects and remain inactive until their target touches them. They have the ability to extract Pure Heart Crystals by using a black star tattoo hidden on their body. The tattoo emits a beam of black light which strikes the target right in the chest, and painfully removes the Heart Crystal from their bodies. The Daimons must continue to do so until the Crystal appears, or else the victim is left in a painful half-state. The next two sets differ from the earlier Daimons as they have fixed-form by a Heart Snatcher Oven when created from that object by Professor Tomoe. The second set function as Eudial's bodyguards, and Mimete's set is made to extract Pure Heart Crystals by kissing it out of their victims to find the ideal heart to awaken Mistress 9. During the climatic battle against Mistress 9, every Daimon hatched and formed a barrier around Infinity Academy. After the battle ends, with the Death Busters no more, only one Daimon survived and bonded with the oven to become Rangy. Fueled by her desire to gather Hearts, Rangy attacks the city until the Soldiers stop her. When a Daimon is destroyed, it returns to the item that it was created from as the Daimon Egg ejects and breaks, releasing the spirit within. For most of Mimete's Daimons, the Heart Crystal returns to the victim afterwards. And in Rangy's case, an oven smashes and the white light zooms away.
The musicals also portray them as using human hosts, but have more in common in appearance with the anime version for failed versions.
