The Morbid Anatomy Museum is a nonprofit exhibition space founded by Joanna Ebenstein and Tracy Hurley Martin in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The museum is an expansion of Ebenstein's long-running project, the Morbid Anatomy Blog and Library and draws heavily on her experiences with the now defunct art groups Observatory and Proteus Gowanus.[1] The museum building includes a lecture and event space, a cafe and a store.[2] Ebenstein is a member of The Order of the Good Death[3]

The Museum was conceived, organized and planned by Joanna Ebenstein, Tracy Hurley Martin, Colin Dickey, and Aaron Beebe and is located at 424a Third Avenue in Brooklyn, a former nightclub building the interior of which was re-modeled by architects Robert Kirkbride and Tony Cohn in 2014.[4] In Ebenstein's words, the new space is designed in order to give a home for a "regular lecture series and DIY intellectual salon that brings together artists, writers, curators and passionate amateurs dedicated to what [Joanna Ebenstein] sums up as 'the things that fall through the cracks'".[5]

The space focuses on forgotten or neglected histories through exhibitions, education and public programming.[6] Themes include nature, death and society, anatomy, medicine, arcane media, and curiosity and curiosities broadly considered. The artifacts featured in its rotating exhibitions are drawn from private collections and museums' storage spaces.[7][8][9]

The museum board consists of Tracy Hurley Martin, Joanna Ebenstein, Jacob Nadal, Amy Slonaker, Renee Soto, Tonya Hurley, and Evan Michelson, and is staffed by Joanna Ebenstein, Laetitia Barbier and Cristina Preda.
