Mula sa Puso (lit. From the Heart) is a Filipino primetime melodrama television series originally aired by ABS-CBN from March 10, 1997 to April 9, 1999 (the series ended for 2 years in its long-run). Claudine Barretto, Rico Yan, and Diether Ocampo played the roles of the main protagonists in the series. It was re-aired in 2008 through Studio 23 and Kapamilya Channel,[1] which are both ABS-CBN subsidiaries. A 2011 remake, starring Lauren Young, JM De Guzman and Enrique Gil, aired on ABS-CBN from March 28, 2011 to August 12, 2011.

The show also gave critical acclaim to director Wenn V. Deramas as his first prime time soap project and as a director and gave character actress Princess Punzalan critical acclaim for her character and antagonist as the phenomenal Selina Perriera-Matias which was also reincarnated again for the television remake by award-winning soap actress Eula Valdez. It was also known for being the most competitive soap, tied with Esperanza, which also ran from 1997 to 1999 and also spanned a film and a soundtrack entitled "Mula Sa Puso ni Esperanza". The TV series had various crossovers with prime time dramas such as Esperanza and the short-lived miniseries Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako.

The show was aired from Mondays to Fridays at 6:30 pm after TV Patrol and also become competition in a rival network GMA Network's soap Ikaw Na Sana.

Plot

The story depicts on the life of Via and as she gracefully turns 18, she will discover she lives a life full of deceit. She will also discover the truth about the identities of her loved ones and the unstoppable troubles when it comes to love and life itself as she falls in love with her savior Gabriel while she also falls into a love triangle with her persistent longtime childhood friend Michael.

Story

Via (Claudine Barretto), the only daughter of Don Fernando (Juan Rodrigo), was raised as his darling princess. On her eighteenth birthday, she found out that her father has promised her hand in marriage to her childhood friend, Michael (Diether Ocampo), and before the birthday party was over, she got kidnapped. She was rescued by a good Samaritan named Gabriel (Rico Yan), whom she fell in love with. Michael, at the latter part of the story, became romantically involved with Via's best friend, Trina (Rica Peralejo). As the story unfolds, Via ended up having to decide between the two men in her life, while learning more about her mother Magda (Jaclyn Jose) and fighting off her evil aunt Selina (Princess Punzalan).

In the story, Selina was one of the most influential characters, due to her desire to acquire the power and wealth of Don Fernando (Juan Rodrigo), her brother. She possesses intelligence in illegal tactics that made her stronger and she used people in order to manipulate them when a bombing in the departure of Via and her family to start a new life began. Via lived a new identity but came back to her family, and they all faced Selina one last time in dignity and Via restored peace in her family.

The series title was based on the theme song which was sung by Jude Michael composed by Vehnee Saturno as the original acoustic version on television from OctoArts Records in 1997. Roselle Nava sang the movie version in 1999. The song was re-released in 2010 as part of 60 Taon ng Musika at Soap Opera. In 2011, for the remake used a version by Jovit Baldivino. Zsa Zsa Padilla's version from 1987 is used as well often in the series.

On February 10, 1999, the series was adapted into a film. The movie was also released with the movie version of another hit soap Esperanza (December 25) on the same day.

Ratings

The series became consistent in its story plot so it was well received by the public. Its pilot episode was 37.9%, the highest rating was 56.5%, while the average was 45.2%.

Remake

After the success of the remake of Mara Clara during the first quarter of the year, ABS-CBN announced that a remake of Mula Sa Puso is on works.[2]

TV and Movie Version Differences

TV version Movie Version
Joei was a recurring/main character for the first part of the original TV series. She portrayed Warren's crush and love interest. Joei never was introduced in the movie version, nor mentioned, thus her short appearance in the TV series.
Nicole was killed by Manuel, as his revenge against Selina. Nicole was instead killed by Abdon, in the movie version, when he accidentally shot her because she saved Via.
Selina killed Abdon with a timed bomb in a briefcase of 1 million pesos. In the original TV series, she did it because he blackmailed her for a crime that he committed that Selina ordered him to do. Selina killed Abdon because he accidentally shot and killed Nicole during Michael and Via's wedding.
After the events of the bus explosion, in the TV series, Selina got diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. She went through a chemotherapy, lost her hair and changed her look. At first she wore a hairnet, then she changed it to a layered wig. In the movie version, Selina did not get diagnosed with lymphoma cancer.
Elena was hired by Selina to pose as Via's biological mother, hoping to hide the truth that Magda's was her mother. Elena's conscience got the best of her and she tried to reveal the truth to Via, but she was kidnapped, tortured, raped, and finally murdered by Selina's henchman. This did not happen in the movie version, and Elena never appeared.
Manuel was a killer in the TV series, and was Magda's brother. He killed Nicole as his revenge to Selina. He later got tortured by Selina's henchmen, and was put to prison for his evil deeds. Manuel was not a murder in the movie version, and he only appeared as a wedding guest in Gabriel and Via's wedding.
Elaine Regalado and Mariel were both raped by Selina's goons. Elaine is a lawyer and former rape victim. After she helped Mariel file a case against Selina, she got raped to stop her from pursuing the case. Mariel, got raped by Selina's henchman because he had a fight with her over a caramel custard. Both of these scenes where not introduced in the movie version. Elaine was never identified and seen, Mariel was just Via's friend was never had a fight with Selina over the custard.
Tindeng was thought to be dead, in the original TV version, but was proven not to be dead. Tindeng was never though as dead.
Ysmael was killed by Selina after saving Via and Magda, from his wife's hands. Ysmael was killed by Michael.
Jennifer and Gilbert were both Ysmael's illegitimate children in the TV version. In the movie version, they don't appear.
Shirley was a woman hired by Selina. She makes a cameo appearance in the film's wedding scene of Gabriel and Via.
Selina kidnapped Via and Magda, in exchange for 1 million pesos, by Fernando. This never happened in the movie version.
Via was introduced as Ella Peralta after she suffered from amnesia from the bus explosion, due to her traumatic experiences. Once Selina found out about this, she shot Carmen, the woman who saved Via. Carmen never got shot, but portrayed a minor role.
Rafael is Carmen's son and Via's friend in the TV version. He makes a cameo as a guest in the film's wedding scene of Gabriel and Via.
Trina was Selina and Fernando's niece in the TV series. She tries to reveal Selina's true tactics and colors, but was blackmailed by her auntie. Later, she admitted her feelings to Michael and they became a couple. Trina made a cameo in the film's wedding scene of Gabriel and Via, and now lives with Michael.
Bagyo saved Selina from a car fire and became her "friend". This happened in the movie version, and was the ending. Selina died in the car explosion in the movie.
After escaping the car explosion, Selina suffered from a burned face. She then had plastic surgery, to try to remake her original look. But due to complications, her face was redone differently. This never happened in the movie version.
Selina ordered Bagyo to kidnap Via's daughter, which is Selina's granddaughter. Then she would ask Fernando for money to help pay for the plastic surgery. Bagyo never appeared in the movie version, thus this scene never happened.
Michael was killed by Bagyo after trying to save Via from Bagyo. He is still alive and is attending Gabriel and Via's wedding and now lives with Trina.
In the finale, Via and Selina have a final confrontation and engaged to a great physical fight. Via shot Selina in the arm, she fell from a building, and was dragged by a speeding truck, while she remembered her monstrous, demonic, and evil deeds. Selina was killed in the car explosion, after Via crashed her car in a store.
