Nairy Baghramian

Nairy Baghramian (born 1971, Isfahan, Iran) is an artist who lives and works in Berlin.[1][2][3][4]

Work

A desire to explore interior spaces, and their implicit social and political tensions, grounds her practice; these spaces can be grand (such as the Shah of Iran's palace, recreated in a photograph she showed at the Kunsthalle Basel, in which innocuous photo frames were filled with images of various dictators), as well as intimate: for the Berlin Biennial she collaborated with ninety-eight-year-old designer Janette Laverriere to create a set for her restrained yet politically loaded furniture design.[5]

About her focus on interior design, the artist says, "I'm interested in the political implications of interior design; namely, why certain designers––mainly women and gay men––withdrew so markedly from the public realm of architecture or urban planning to concentrate on the domestic sphere. It is here that they engaged with objects."[6]

Important solo exhibitions by Baghramian have been presented at the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City (2015); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal (2014); List Visual Arts Center at MIT, Cambridge, US (2013); SculptureCenter, New York, US (2013); Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany (2012); Studio Voltaire, London, UK (2009); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (2008); Kunstvereing Numberg, Germany (2007); and Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2006). She has participated in the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, Ireland (2012); the 45th International Venice Biennial, Italy (2011); and the 5th Berlin Biennale, Germany (2008).[7]
