Newton is an email management application for iOS, Android, Chrome OS and macOS developed by CloudMagic, Inc. The application is known for its searching capabilities, cross-platform abilities and user interface.[1][2] It has been referred to as an email client better than Gmail's native app.[3][4] As from September 15, 2016, CloudMagic has been renamed to Newton Mail with premium services.[5]

Features

CloudMagic provides support for Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, Outlook.com, iCloud, Google Apps, Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, Mail.com, GMX, AOL and IMAP accounts. The application currently runs on all iOS devices running iOS 8 and above, and Android devices running Android 4.0 and above. CloudMagic was one of the first apps on Chrome OS when Google decided to bring Android apps to Chromebook.[6][7]

In March 2014, CloudMagic announced Cards, a feature that connects popular services like Evernote, Pocket, Trello, Todoist, Asana, Microsoft OneNote, Salesforce.com, Zendesk and integrates them with the app. Cards make it easier for users to complete their workflow without leaving their email.[8] [9][10][11] CloudMagic was one of the first apps to support Android Wear when it was announced in Google I/O, June 2014.[12][13]

In January 2015, CloudMagic launched a "Pro" subscription service ($4.99 monthly; $44.99 yearly) to allow greater than five mail accounts be added, preference and configuration sync, among others.[14] The Pro subscription was discontinued in April of the same year.[15] In April 2016, CloudMagic partially reintroduce premium services by introducing Sender Profile,[16] then on September 14, 2016, renamed CloudMagic to Newton and fully introduce a subscription fee of $49.99 yearly (with 14-day trial).[5] The change was met with negative response from the user.[17] Newton maintained that, contrary to the beliefs, the basic functionality of the mail will remain free after the trial period, but the premium feature requires subscription.

Newton Mail introduced a host of new features including Read Receipts, Snooze emails, Connected Apps, Undo Send, Send Later and Sender Profiles.

Read Receipts allow users to track the status of their email, whether this has been read and users can be notified when it has been read by recipient, in real time.

Snooze emails give you the ability to mute emails for a later time, so they appear when you need them. You can also snooze to desktop, allowing users to read this later/anytime on their desktop experience.

Connected Apps include integrations with apps like Todoist, Asana, Evernote, Pocket and many more to help users get more done with their favourite productivity apps.

Undo Send allows users to retract an email that has been just sent, useful for any errors made or recipient issues.

Send Later is a new feature allowing users to schedule emails for another time. This is a popular technique used by many professionals like Tim Ferriss to reduce time in email.

Sender Profiles gives you access to the professional profile online - allowing you to see their LinkedIn, Twitter, AngelList and summary of their work to help build context around a conversation.

All of these features are included within the yearly subscription, the features also work across all email accounts (Gmail, Exchange, Google Apps, Office 365, Outlook.com, IMAP and iCloud) and across all devices (iOS, Android, MacOS) with a Newton Mail Windows application coming in January 2017.

Reception

CloudMagic has received positive reviews.[18][19][20] It's Mac version was considered by some to be the best mail client on mobile,[21] with praise focused on the consistent emailing experience on desktop and it's distraction-free design.[22][23] In April 2014, CloudMagic won the Webby Awards People's Voice for "Best Visual Design - Function".[24] In September 2014, CloudMagic won ‘Best Design’ award at Evernote Platform Awards.[25]

Critics

The application has been criticised[26] for using intermediate servers through which all the user data will transit, thus giving access to CloudMagic Inc. to the user's emails and to the password used to access these email accounts.

The business-model change in September 2016 to a subscription model for the extra features ($49,99/year) was not well received by users. [27]
