Northern High School is a public secondary school located in Owings, Calvert County, Maryland.
Statistics
At Northern High, students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement course work and exams. The AP participation rate at Northern High is 44 percent. The student body makeup is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 17 percent. Northern High is 1 of 4 high schools in the Calvert County Public Schools. The student/teacher ratio is 18:1.

Northern's athletic teams are nicknamed the Patriots and the school colors are red, white, and blue. The Northern Patriots have won a total of 27 team state championships. Ever since the completion of Huntingtown High School in 2004, Huntingtown has been the Patriots' biggest rival. Because of the location of Huntingtown, many athletes that would have gone to Northern go to Huntingtown which doesn't take away from the rivalry. Northern's softball team has won 12 state championships including 8 consecutive Maryland 3A state championships (2008-2015). This is a Maryland state record for consecutive championships. They also had a Maryland state record 77-game winning streak, which was ended in March 2014 by Chopticon High School. The team was ranked number 1 in the country according to both the USA Today / NFCA poll and the MaxPreps poll for the 2012-3013 season.
Teams
Baseball
The Northern Patriots baseball team were state semifinalists in 1976, 1978, 1992, and 2009. They reached the finals in back-to-back seasons, doing so in 1989 and 1990.
Boys' Basketball
The Patriots' Boys' Basketball team were semifinalists in 1989, 1991, and 2000. They were finalists in 1984 and 1990.
Boys' Cross Country
The Northern Boys' Cross Country Team has never been a state finalist. Northern has won one individual state championship. In 1995, Nick Gramsky won the state championship on the 3-mile Hereford High School course with a time of 17:00.
Boys' Indoor Track
The 1983 Northern team beat Peary High School (60-41) to capture their first and only team state championship in the sport. John Rhinehart won the pole vault event, Gary Gross won the shot-put, and Rodney Giles won the 600-yd run and 1000-yd run to help win that title. In 1982, Rodney Giles won the 1000-yd run and the 1600-m run. The 2000 shot-put competition was won by Chris Parsons. The 2000 pole vault competition was won by Adam Leach. In 2003, Delannie Spriggs won the 55-m. In 2004, the 1600-m and 3200-m was won by Ryan Murphy. In 2005, Rickey Moore won the shot-put event. The 800-m and 1600-m was won by Ryan O'Connor in 2010.
Boys' Lacrosse
The Northern Boys' Lacrosse team is the perennial leader of the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, going undefeated in the regular season since 2009. Despite the success of the Patriots in the regular season, they've only reached the semifinals three times (2005, 2014, 2016.)
Boys' Soccer
The Northern Boys' Soccer team is the best soccer program in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. The Patriots were semifinalists in 2001, 2006, 2007, and 2009. In 2010 and 2013, the Northern Patriots made it to the state championship games, but lost to Reservoir High School and Urbana High School, respectively.
Boys' Swimming and Diving
The Northern Boys' Swimming and Diving Team hasn't won any team championships but has had accomplished individuals. The 50-yd freestyle and 200-yd freestyle was won by Michael Gray in 2007. In 2013 and 2014, Ben Lawless won the 200-yd freestyle and the 500-yd freestyle. Both set in the 2014 meet, Ben Lawless holds the Maryland State Meet Records for the 200-yd freestyle (1:39.40) and 500-yd freestyle (4:26.17). The Northern 200-yd freestyle relay team won in 2007 and 2009.
Boys' Track and Field
At the 1980 state track meet, the Northern Boys' Track team won their first state championship. They would then go on to win the 1982 championship and repeat in 1983. In 1984, they finished second to Central High School. Rodney Giles set the 800-m record in 1983 (1:51.00).
Field Hockey
In 1997, headed by coach Mary Finley, the Northern Patriots Field Hockey team won its first and only state championship beating Fallston High School, 2-1. The team has made it to the state tournament 12 times, the 13th most in state history. The team lost in the finals in 1994, and were semifinalists in 1983, 1984, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Football
The Northern Football team has never won a state title. In 1989, MD HOF Coach Jerry Frank's return to high school coaching, Northern became the first Calvert County team, in history, to win a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) title. Northern went to three straight state semifinals from 1989-1991. They were also regional semifinalists in 2003. Rondell Jones (RB/S) and J.C. Price (TE/MLB) were both on the 1989 SMAC Championship team, and both played in the NFL. J.C. Price is, currently, the Defensive Line Coach at Marshall University.
Girls' Basketball
The Northern Girls' Basketball team has reached to the state semifinals in 1991 and 1999.
Girls' Indoor Track
The Girls' Indoor Track Team hasn't won a championship but individuals have. Christine Barr won the 1600 m in 1989 and 1990 and the 800 m in 1990. In 2001, Ramera Nero won the 55-m. The 1600-m in 2004, 2005, and 2006 were won by Keely Murphy.
Girls' Soccer
Northern has not won a state championship in Girls' Soccer, but were semifinalists in 2000, 2007, 2008, and 2014.
Girls' Track and Field
In 1981, the Girls' Track and Field Team came in second to Frederick High School. The 1998 team also came in second at the state meet, this time to Frederick Douglass High School.
Golf
The Northern Golf team are two-time state finalists. Due to inclement weather, the 2005 individual boys' championships was split between 5 golfers including Northern's Sam Hoffer.
Softball
Northern's premiere program, the softball team has won the Maryland State Championship 12 times. Northern has won three-in-a-row from 1994-1996, a single championship in 2001, and eight straight from 2008-2015. The softball team also holds many MPSSAA records. Taryn McDonald is one of six to hit two home runs in the state tournament. Kaitlyn Schmeiser is tied for the record for the most doubles in state tournament history (5). She also holds the records for most championship wins as a pitcher (4), most state tournament wins as a pitcher (8), and most shutouts pitched in the state tournament (6). Kelly Shipman and Candice Rice are two of six to have tossed a perfect game in the state tournament. Shipman also is tied for the record for the most no-hitters in state tournament history (3). Candice Rice holds a share for the record for the most wins in a single season (23). Jessica Cummings holds the records for the lowest ERA in a season (0.00) and a share of the shutouts in a season (21). The records for most runs scored in a season (59) and career (160), most hits in a season (59) and career (166), and most career doubles (43) are held by Lindsey Schmeiser. The record for most doubles in a season (17) is held by Kelly Shipman. The Northern softball program holds the records for most consecutive games won (77), and the records for most consecutive championships (7) and total championships (11). The 1990 team were semifinalists and the 1993 team were finalists.
Volleyball
Historically, the Northern Volleyball program is one of the best. They've won the fourth most state championships in Maryland history with ten. They most recently won the state championship in 2015. They won four straight from 1994-1997 and three straight from 1999-2001. The state tournament has hosted the Patriots 15 times. They lost in the semifinals in 1986 and 2006, and in the finals in 1988, 1991, and 1992. The program also holds several Maryland records. Tera Blevins averaged 79 assists in the 1997 semifinal and final matches. Brandi Blevins averaged 32 service points in the 1996 semifinal and final matches. Lisa Cline has a tie for the record on kill efficiency (.545). Northern has a tie with the record for the fewest service points allowed in a game. They allowed zero in the 2000 semifinals. The 1999 volleyball team won the Lesley A. Cooke Sportsmanship Award.
Wrestling
The Patriots' Wrestling team won the 1994 state championship by only half of a point. The team came in second in the 1996 championship, and third in 2013 and 2014. The Wrestling team won the 1995 Dual Meet State Championship. They finished second in 1996, 2001, and 2005. They reached the semifinals in 1994, 2000, and 2002. The 1996 105-lb champion was Northern's Jason Gabrielson. In 1997, Gabrielson won the 119-lb championship. In 2004, Randy Oates was crowned the 171-lb champion. Collin Leadbeter won the 130-lb championship in 2006 and the 135-lb in 2007. Brant Leadbeter won the 113-lb championship in 2012 and 2013. The 160-lb championship was won by Eric Hoffman. Breandon Coughlin won 106-lb championship in 2014.
