Nylon Pink is a rock band, and the self-described "only all-Asian American female band in the United States."[1][2][3]
Band Composition
The band was formed in 2008 and based in Hollywood, California, started primarily by Kaila Yu and Katt Lee, and initially comprised Kaila Yu on the lead vocals, Katt Lee (aka Kitt E. Katt) on bass, Theresa Houston on guitar, TJ McDonnell on the drums and DJ Shy (Karen Jin Beck) on the turntables.[4] DJ Shy eventually became an honorary member and would occasionally join the group from time to time, and rhythm guitarist Genn became the rhythm guitarist, with Kiki Wongo joining as lead guitarist and Deb on the drums.[5] Then, the group became for the longest time a quintet, comprising Kaila Yu on lead vocals, Katt Lee on bass, Kiki Wongo on lead guitar, Jamie Scoles on drums, and Yuki Ito[6] on keyboard.[7][8] The group has since recently become a three-member band compromising Kiki Wongo as lead guitar and vocals, Katt Lee as bassist, and Yuki Ito (aka YukiBomb) as keyboardist and background vocals.[9]
Songs and Style
The style of Nylon Pink is a combination of pop, punk and rock, and their page on MySpace has over 10 million views with over 470,000 friends.[10] Their style has been described as "Hello Kitty on Acid" and Katy Perry crossed with Shiny Toy Guns with a Harajuku edge.[11] A jewelry and fashion line inspired by their music is known as "Hello Drama," which was founded by Kaila Yu.[12][13]
Their original songs include "My Religion", "Fluff", "The New Black", "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "We Got The Beat", "Dirty In Pink" and "Party Monster".[14][15]
The band has also performed covers (also adding English lyrics) of popular K-pop songs including SNSD/Girls Generation's "Gee",[16] 2NE1's "I Am The Best", SNSD/Girls Generation's "Run Devil Run", Hyuna's "Ice Cream", Big Bang's "Blue", and Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me".[17][18] They have so far released only one EP comprising mainly cover songs (which have garnered hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube so far).
Appearances and Media Coverage
LA Weekly has called Nylon Pink one of Los Angeles's “sexiest, glitziest bands”,[19] Reverb Nation hailed them as the “2011 Artist on the Verge,”[20] and they earned a nomination for “Pop Artist of the Year” at the LA Music Awards.[21]
They have also appeared in photospreads for publications such as FHM Spain,[22] FHM Singapore[23] FHM Malaysia,[24] and other publications.
They have also toured in Thailand, China and South America, with plans to tour the states, in addition to visiting Japan and other parts of Asia, starting in March 2013.
