Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou
Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou are a band from Benin, which plays afrobeat, funk, soukous and other styles, often based on Vodun rhythms.
Biography
The band were first formed in 1966 under the name Orchestre Poly-Disco in the coastal town of Cotonou. They recorded around 500 songs between the late 1960s and early 1980s, playing a variety of musical styles for various Beninese record labels. Their debut album was originally released in 1973.[1]
A compilation of their back catalogue released on the Popular African Music label in 2003[2] was followed by Kings of Benin on Soundway Records the following year[3] and a series of compilations on Analog Africa from 2008, bringing the band to greater global attention.[4][5][6][7] This interest led the band to reform, tour internationally from 2009 and release new album Cotonou Club in 2011.[8][9][10]
