Park Place Mall or Park Place Shopping Centre, is a shopping mall in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
Built in 1988, the 477,000+ sq ft mall covers four city blocks downtown and includes over 120 stores, including four anchor stores, Sears.,[1] Winners, Shopper's Drug Mart and Galaxy Cinema.
In fall 2011, Park Place Shopping Centre was awarded the “BOMA BESt – Level 4” designation, the highest environmental designation available in Canada through the BOMA BESt program for environmental performance, energy management and ongoing environmental initiatives. One of those initiatives began in 2010 with a partnership with bullfrogpower. Park Place started integrating both renewable wind energy and natural gas into the shopping centre using the energy generated at the Pincher Creek Wind Farm and gas generated through a methane-capture project. The centre is now using 100% renewable wind energy and natural gas in the common areas, food court and offices, which echoes their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Park Place management believes that the shopping centre has an essential role in being a positive ambassador for environmental leadership which is promoted through several ongoing environmental programs. Some of the other programs include a centre wide Recycling and Waste Management Plan (diverting well over 2,000 TONS of waste since inception), water and energy conservation using low-flow water fixtures and timed low energy lighting, continued improvement of indoor air quality through oxygen emitting foliage, as well as a Sustainable Rooftop Garden. The garden consists of planters constructed of reclaimed wood/shipping pallets, it is fed with harvested rainwater and compost from food court tenants and the vegetables are then donated to YWCA Harbour House.
Their innovative programs and BOMA BESt-Level 4 achievement has since lead to the accomplishments of receiving the 2014 BOMA Canada Earth Award, and the Certificate of Excellence through BOMA Canada in 2012 which led to being recognized as The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY®) at both the Regional and National level that same year. The TOBY® Award is the most prestigious and comprehensive program of its kind in the commercial real estate industry recognizing quality in commercial real estate buildings and rewarding excellence in building management through community impact, tenant relations, energy conservation, environmental, regulatory and sustainability, emergency preparedness & security standards and the training of building personnel.
The mall's property is leased from the City of Lethbridge and the Province of Alberta until August 2018, with four ten-year options and one five-year option thereafter.[2]
