Payradanga is a sub-urban area in Nadia District. It falls close to Ranaghat. Over the years it has burst out in population.

History

The entire history combines places like Payradanga, Anulia, Baidyapur & Haradham. Well planned roads connect all these places & the culture here. In 1606 A.C. Bhabananda Roy Majumder was the King of Nadia according to the Mughal Empire Jahangir's 14 Parganas. Later on Raja Rudra (1683–94) established the city Krishnagar. However the development in Nadia was led by Raja Krishnachandra (1728–82). He built religious places & small localities around different places in Nadia. That time he also built a locality at Haradham(Currently in Payradanga) & Anandadham. Particularly he took steps to develop Haradham in various ways. This was the beginning.There were many areas scattered in and around Payradanga while during the '50s some social workers like Khitish Chandra Guha, Rohonikanta Das, Bhabes Chandra Chakroborty & many more others took the initiative develop a well designed locality in Pritinagar. They built a co-operative to support the dream. After that they established the Pritinagar High School and started Bengali's greatest festival Durga Puja & more activities for the people. May be that time the place they try to build was vacant, but what they dreamed was true, because currently Payradanga is one of the famous names for many things in the District of Nadia. The first structured ruling system employed here was the Chowkidary Panchayat system that started in 1870 during the British Period. In 1885 this two-level ruling structure was formed by the British Govt.Post independence, the ruling scheme designed was with a little change in the previous. In 1957 the first Panchayet structure was employed in West Bengal, but in 1973 this law was passed & a 3-stage panchayet was employed, i.e. Zilla Parishad, Block Panchayet Samiti. The 1st Gram Panchayat election started from June 1978.

Demographics

Payradanga is a small village in the Nadia District of West Bengal. It is a peaceful and calm locality and its proximity to the Ganges makes it an ideal weekend spot (Mangaldeep Island). It is situated between the two better known railway stations of Ranaghat and Chakdah.

Transport

It is well connected by the local train transport system to the Sealdah-Ranaghat Line and the National Highway 34. Children Paradise tried to eradicate illiteracy involving himself, spending lot of money by selling his own property, helping others to stand on feet.

Famous Peoples

He was an Active Freedom fighter & political leader. He was one of the Majors of netaji's Bengal Voluntery. After independence he was an active social worker. You can find his portrait in Mahataji Sadan, Kolkata.

Active member of Goa freedom fight against the Portuguese after the independence. On 31 July 1955 he went to Goa with others to join the other fighters in Goa, but he gave his life on 3 August 1955, during the fight.

Active social workers & a famous figure in medical study. He was one of the members of the Pritinagar Colony foundation & Payradanga Foundation.

First music teacher of our Kabiguru Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Active freedom fighter & leader. He was also active member of Jugoutas fortey.

Famous Name in educational history. He was an M.A. (Triple)B.T., He was as the Head Master of Pritinagar Bhudeb Smriti Vidyapith for 5 long years.

Literature & Art

From the birth of this place, peoples come into the light of literature world. Many Bramhin Pandits wrote books(puthi) in various topics. Some of them are kept into some toles, even we can found some Panjikas which are 100 years old.

Ramesh Chandra Chakroborty(Pandit) who is one of the few people who spent his prime time with Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan has written few good books. After that many writers wrote various books from here, the list is huge.

If we look at the history, Payradanga has a unique place in the sector of drama. In ancient locality more or less there is a craze of drama acting, but those are all armature, basically they used to do it in festivals. But after the independence in 1947 people started to come home here & start to build a healthy locality in different places here like Pritinagar, Parbatipur, Gopalpur, Baninagar etc.

The First well organized drama group 'Milan Samity Natyagosthy' in 1953 founded by Subodh Ghosh, the first drama they have played is 'Parthasarathy' written by Utpalendu Sen. Khitish Chandra Ghosh, Sukuar Chowdhury, Sitangshu Chowdhury, Badal Sarkar, Dr. K.C. Saha, Dr. Brajabasi Aditya, Bhabotosh Majumder were well known figure in this field.

Many here organization like 'Bhartiya Ganenatya Sangha' ,'Students' Cultural Unit', 'Tarun Sangha', 'Rupayan' , 'Payradanga Anchalik Natya Sangha', 'Natya Sangastha'are other well known drama groups here.

Also 'Nabin Natya Sangha' of Nandighat, 'Dramatic Club(founder Apurba Chattajee) in 1965, 'Anamica Theater Center' (founder Prabir Nag) in 1978, 'Manaharaty (founder Subhas Nandi), is some famous name in the history of drama.

After the independence few Club organization started to publish many Magazine & papers. First one is 'Parag' in 1954(The editor was Rabi Dutta), in 1978'Bamichandan, in 1982 Kowrab, in 1986 'Agnifine' are some historical magazine published from here.

Currently few famous magazines are 'Disha', Padakyep', 'Pabitra, 'Bikyan', 'Charabhami', etc. Nadia Baul Academy is a cultural organization, this organization work for folk culture. There are may cultural institute "Rupkala Academy", "Kalakhetra", "Geeta Bharati" etc.

Famous Festivals Of Payradanga

 -----organized by Nadia Baul Academy, at Pritinagar Bhudeb Smriti Vidyapith.

In the village of patuli, their Festival started on Maghi Purnimas in evening time & continued for seven days.

For the village of Kayetpara this ancient festival occurred on every Kartik Sankranti continued for two days to workship Dhama Thakur.

In the area of Sal bagan Anulia this festival is only the worship 'Manasha Debi' in a local mandir.

In different places of Payradanga namely Parbotipur, Ukilnara, Rupper, ghatigachha, Anulia, bhagirathi bazaar & other placed the festival occurred in chaitra sankrantu & 1st Baisak in every year.

After 12 days of Dole Utsab this festival occurred at Pritinagar Bazar in every year.

This festival occurred in different place mainly at Pritinagar Brigrahabari, Ukilnara kalibari, Pernimatpur Tetultala, Bhagirathi Bazar, Badiyapur Dayarambaba Asram, Ghatigachha Asram & New Goplapur Das Bari.

After Sibratri every year this festibal occurred at the house of Mahananda Roy of pritinagar.

From the Silver Jubilee year,2003 of 'Rabindrabhaban & Shahid Nityananda Smriti Granthagar', this book fair started & continued in 'Tarun Sangha' Club premises every year.

From the year 2003 in the month of February every year occurred at Payradanga town club premises.
