Philipp Heerwagen (born 13 April 1983, in Kelheim, Lower Bavaria) is a German football goalkeeper[1][2] currently playing for FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga in Germany.

Career

Youth teams

Heerwagen moved at the age of four to Unterhaching in Bavaria. He started his career as field player at local club SpVgg Unterhaching but changed early to the goalkeeper position. At the age of 14, Heerwagen moved to the youth of Bayern Munich. In this period he debuted in the German Youth National Team and won the German Youth Championship in 2001.

SpVgg Unterhaching

At the age of 18, SpVgg Unterhaching offered Heerwagen a professional contract. So he went back to his old club. Heerwagen became first goalkeeper in his first season and promoted with SpVgg Unterhaching in the 2. Bundesliga in 2003. Subsequently, Unterhaching delivered poor results in the 2. Bundesliga, narrowly avoiding being relegated again in both 2004 and 2006 before finally dropping into the Regionalliga in 2007, finishing 16th in the table due to FC Carl Zeiss Jena's 2–1 win against FC Augsburg. Nevertheless, Heerwagen was usually seen as a very talented goalkeeper by different German football magazines.

VfL Bochum

Several professional clubs were interested in the young keeper but Heerwagen decided to go to Bundesliga club VfL Bochum on 10 July 2007. He signed a contract for three years at the club from the Ruhr. He started into the season as second goalkeeper behind the Czech Jan Laštůvka.
