Mission

The mission of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is "to provide an academically challenging and stimulating environment for all students, and to enable them to realize their full potential to be happy, ethical and analytical citizens of the world. We do this by: making tolerance, acceptance, respect, honesty, and kindness expectations for all students, and for members of the Plainview-Old Bethpage school community; identifying each student's academic, social-emotional, aesthetic and physical needs, and striving to meet those needs; and encouraging communication between and among students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members."[1]

History

The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District was referred to as Central School District #4 until the 1970s.

The original school in Plainview was a one room school house, built in 1899, called Manetto Hill Road School. This building, which still stands, is adjacent to the much larger school of the same name, which was built in the 1950s. Today, both buildings are owned by the Mid-Island Y-JCC. The original building is now owned by the Mid-Island Y-JCC. and houses additional Y offices. It is also rented to and serves as an office for the Nassau-Suffolk Region BBYO.

Old Bethpage had its own two room school house, built in 1919 nicknamed the Little Red Schoolhouse, located on Schoolhouse Road off of Round Swamp Road. It graduated its last two kindergarten classes in 1969. The building was torn down in the 1970s and the property was developed into several houses.

Plainview once had two high schools, Plainview-Old Bethpage High School (built 1960) and John F. Kennedy High School (built 1966). The schools were merged in 1991 into Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. This new school kept John F. Kennedy High School's colors of blue and white and adapted the mascot of the Hawks to replace its abandoned Eagle mascot and Plainview-Old Bethpage High School's green and yellow Gulls. After the high school merger, Plainview Middle School became Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School and moved into the Plainview-Old Bethpage High School building, and Jamaica Avenue School was closed and Stratford Road Elementary School opened in the former Plainview Middle School building. At one point, the two middle schools had been junior high schools, going up to the 9th grade, in 1978 the 9th grade was moved to the high schools. Pasadena Elementary School was closed for 18 years until it was reopened when the POBCSD redistricted for the 2000-2001 school year.
