Praveen Chakravarty is a former investment banker, angel investor and now a political economist with a think tank IDFC Institute. He is a co-founder of Mumbai Angels and is ranked among the top 5 angel investors in the country as per this survey[1] Chakravarty quit as Managing Director of BNP Paribas India to work as a volunteer with the central government's UID project under Nandan Nilekani, in their financial inclusion initiative. Post his voluntary stint, he moved back to investment banking as CEO of an Indian investment bank. He subsequently retired from investment banking to focus on public policy and social impact initiatives while continuing to be an active angel investor.[2]
Early life
Praveen Chakravarty is an alumnus of BITS, Pilani and an MBA from Wharton School.
Career
Praveen Chakravarty started his career with IBM in Japan and subsequently moved to Microsoft. He switched to investment banking in New York and San Francisco, after receiving his MBA from Wharton. Chakravarty moved to India to set up Thomas Weisel's India operations and 2 years later, captured headlines in a high-profile move to BNP Paribas as Managing Director with his entire team from Thomas Weisel.[3] 4 years later, in a sudden move that caught everyone by surprise, he joined Nandan Nilekani's team at Aadhaar as a volunteer.
Chakravarty serves on many corporate boards. He was the founding board member of InMobi (erstwhile mKhoj), mSwipe, VCCircle and many such successful startups.
Chakravarty's frequent opinion articles in newspapers use data extensively and challenge conventional wisdom. He is said to have donated to India's first data journalism initiative - India Spend and legislative research firm PRS Legislative. Chakravarty is a well respected public affairs commentator.[4][5] [6]
