The Quality of Government (QoG)-institute is an independent research institute at the University of Gothenburg.
The institute was founded by Professors Bo Rothstein and Sören Holmberg in 2004 and is partly financed by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond), the Swedish Science Council (Vetenskapsrådet), and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.
The main objective the QoG institute´s research is to address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality can be created and maintained. Another objective is to study the effects of Quality of Government on a number of policy areas, such as health, the environment, social policy, and poverty.
Since its start in 2004, the QoG institute has continuously gathered various data related to its research field. Since 2008, the institute has also conducted their own web surveys among experts in the public administration. Today, the survey comprises data from 1053 experts over 135 countries. All data is compiled in different databases and are free to download on the institute’s website. On the institute’s website, there is also a data visualization tool available that makes it possible to create interactive maps and scatter plots.
The QoG institute participates in a number of international research projects. During the years 2012-2017, the institute is coordinating a large scale research project - ANTICORRP - financed by the European Commissions Seventh Framework Programme.
Most of the scientific articles, reports, and working papers that are produced by the institutes’ researchers are free to download on the institute’s website.
