Rajiv Kumar Joon

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was an Indian military officer with the 22nd Battalion of the Grenadiers Regiment.[1] On 16 September 1994, he was leading a search operation for militants in the Pulwama of Jammu and Kashmir. When his team came under heavy fire from the militants, he crawled forward to the militant hideout and lobbed hand grenades, killing a militant. Although he sustained serious injuries, he hesitated to be evacuated and killed another militant. Later, he succumbed to his injuries. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peace time military decoration in India.[2]
