Rowan Hillson

Rowan Mary Hillson MBE FRCP (born 1951) is a British physician.[1]

Rowan Hillson graduated with an MBChB degree in Medicine from Birmingham University in 1974.[2][3]

Hillson was the National Clinical Director for Diabetes ('the Diabetes Tsar') at the Department of Health from 2008 to 2013.[4] While Diabetes Tsar, Hillson established the National Diabetes Information Service.[5][6]

During her time as consultant physician Rowan Hillson developed the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit at Hillingdon Hospital. Hillson and her diabetes team won the Hospital Doctor of the Year Diabetes Award in 1997.[4][7] Hillson was Consultant Physician, Diabetes and Endocrinology, at Hillingdon Hospital from 1989 to 2012, and honorary Consultant Physician from 2012 to 2013.[1]

Hillson was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2006 for contributions to medicine and healthcare. She was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by Brunel University in 2011 in recognition of her services to medicine and healthcare.[8]

The Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care established the Rowan Hillson Insulin Safety Award to promote excellent practice in insulin safety.[9][9] In 2006 Hilson was elected to the national committee of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists.[10]
