Lucas is a specialist subcontractor working in the UK construction industry. Based in Wrotham in Kent, Lucas provides decorative and protective coatings services including general decoration, spray-applied finishes, protective and hygienic coatings and special paint effects. It also provides a commercial buildings finishing and fit-out service.

History

S. Lucas was founded by Sam Lucas in 1969 (S. Lucas Ltd was incorporated in July 1976)[1] and its sister company, Lucas Fit Out, was established in 2008. Sam’s eldest son, Danny Lucas, joined the company in 1982 and became managing director[2] in 1997. In a management buy-out in late 2010 he acquired his father’s shareholding and became chairman of the S Lucas Group on his father’s retirement from the day-to-day business.[3] Commercial director Ken Mulholland and Danny’s brother Adam Lucas, both of whom had worked for the company for 10 years, also became shareholders as a result of the MBO.[4]

Awards

In March 2010, Lucas won the Finishing and Fit Out Category in the Specialist Awards organised by Construction News. It was shortlisted for the same award in 2011[5] and 2013, and won it again in 2012[2] and for a third time in 2014. Lucas also received a "Very High Commendation" in the Painting and Decorating Association's annual awards for 2012. Lucas also won the Specialist Contractor category of the 2014 Building Awards organised by Building magazine.[6]

Lucas provides decorative and protective coatings services including general decoration, spray applied finishes, protective and hygienic coatings and special paint effects. It also provides a commercial buildings finishing and fit-out service. In July 2010 the company re-launched the Muralplast brand of coatings and protective finishes.[7]

Lucas ProTools

Lucas ProTools is a subsidiary company providing a range of products for painting and decorating professionals. The company and its flagship product, the ProFinish paintbrush, was launched at an event held at the McLaren Technology Centre in November 2014.[8][9][10][11] The brush design includes a hand-crafted, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited beech wooden handle[12] and DuPont Chinex filaments.[13]

In 2015 the ProFinish brush won the product design prize at the Red Dot Awards.[14] It was also shortlisted for product of the year at the Mixology awards,[15] organised by Mix Interiors magazine.[16]

Projects

Lucas secured painting and decorating packages from major contractors on large projects including Heathrow Terminal 5, the O2, the 2012 Olympic Stadium,[4] the Shard of Glass[17] and the Guildhall in London, and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon. Other projects include Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in East London, Birmingham New Street Station and the Café Royal in London’s Regent Street. Additionally Lucas is contract partner to carry out fit out and finishing work to McLaren's HQ, the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking.[18]

Lucas's commercial buildings finishing and fit out service has been deployed on financial datacentres, facilities at Heathrow and the refurbishment of the Savoy Hotel in London.[19] It delivered the fit-out of the two stations at the Emirates Air Line (cable car) crossing over the River Thames in east London.[20]
