Salome MC (Persian: سالومه, born 1985), is a female rap and multimedia artist from Iran.[1] She is known for being Iran's first female rap artist,[2] and today is one of the few.[3] She was recognized as one of the top non-English speaking Hip-Hop artists by MTV [4] and Time magazine,[5] and her art work has been featured in various platforms including Venice Biennale.[6]

Salome first started her music journey by collaborating with Hichkas, one of the currently prominent Iranian rappers, in 2002. .[7] She went on to release a collaboration album with the German/Iranian rapper Shirali called Delirium in 2006, and a mixtape called Paranoid Descent in 2009 [8] which put her in the list of finalists for Freedom to Create Prize in 2010.[9] in 2013, she released I Officially Exist, the first Hip Hop album by a female Iranian Hip-Hop artist,[10] and the first music video from the album called Price of Freedom was crowdfunded to be produced by Sahar Sarshar.[11]

In 2015, she collaborated with Japanese Rap artist Shing02 for a worldwide recording project called 1+1,[12] and the resulting documentary Passenger was released in March 2016.[13] She was also one of the participants in the remake project of Fela Kuti's Zombie, featuring Seun Kuti.[14]

The same year, she announced her self-produced upcoming album Melancious (ناخوشاگاه) and debuted the first song Odium (رسوا) at the Music Freedom Day festival 2016 in Norway.[15] The music Video for "Odium" was released in October 2016.[16]

Salome MC started working as a sound and video artist while getting her master's degree in Audio/visual Arts from Japan, and her work has been screened and exhibited in various festivals around the world since, including Swatch's "Faces" exhibit at Venice Biennale in 2015 with her music video Vacuum featuring artist and musician Don Porcella.[17] Her video Concealment was one of the selected shorts to be screened at the Iranian Film Festival in L.A., and her experimental documentary "Three Rituals of Perdurance" was among the chosen shorts at the Currents New Media Festival 2015 in Santa Fe.[18]
