Sara Mayhew (born 16 July 1984 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario) is a writer and graphic artist who works predominantly in English-language manga. Mayhew studied graphic design at Canadore College in North Bay Ontario from 2002-2005. The recipient of a TED Fellowship, Mayhew has spoken on the TED Fellows stage at conference events as well as featuring at the independent TEDx event in Sudbury, Ontario.

Career

Secrets of Sorcerers, Mayhew's first published work, was a webcomic. In 2005, she redrew it for print publication.[1] The Ontario Arts Council awarded Mayhew a Northern Arts grant to finance Secrets of Sorcerers Vol. 2.[2][3] The work also received an award from the International Manga and Anime Festival, a discontinued convention once held at County Hall in the UK, London by the now defunct County Hall Animation Studio.[4][5]

In 2006, Mayhew illustrated the children's book The First Emperor by Vicki Low, about Prince Fu Su son of Emperor Zheng,[6] and self-published the short webcomic Love Pet.[7]

In 2008 Mayhew began work on the Legend of the Ztarr, which she self-published in serial form in 2011[8][9] with the aid of a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.[10] In 2013, Mayhew launched a crowdfunding campaign to extend the series,[11] with a projected publication date in July 2016.[12]

In 2016 Mayhew illustrated the sketch and reference guide IDRAW MANGA, edited by Matt Marrocco, a reference with background information on the manga art industry and an introduction to character design, proportions and background effects.[13]

Media

Mayhew was awarded a TED Fellowship in 2009 and spoke on the TED Fellows stage at the TED 2009 conference in Long Beach, CA and at TEDActive 2010 in Palm Springs, CA.[14] Additionally, Mayhew has spoken at a TEDx event, an event independent of the TED Conferences, in Sudbury, Ontario in 2013.[15]

In 2009, Mayhew was featured in the TEDFellows 2009 Nokia Responsiveness campaign, in which she described her work as the promotion of critical thinking through storytelling.[16][17]

Skepticism

Mayhew has written in skeptical periodicals, spoken on podcasts and at conventions, with particular focus on how she used her art to reflect her skeptical viewpoint.[18] Other venues include The Reality Check,[19] the Skepticality podcast, The Amaz!ng Meeting 9, [20] The Token Skeptic podcast,[21] The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe,[22] CSICon 2012, Dragon Con, and the San Diego Comic Con.[23]
