History
Seedcamp was originally founded as a pan-European accelerator programme in 2007. Over eight years, the company has established itself as a pre-seed and seed stage fund that provides a lifelong platform to support its global portfolio.
The firm was originally created by Saul Klein and Reshma Sohoni to energize the next generation of European entrepreneurs to think big and take risks.[4] Participating VCs and advisors in Seedcamp's launch included Index Ventures, Atomico Investments, Atlas Venture, Balderton Capital, TAG, Forsyth Group and Brown Rudnick.[5] Carlos Espinal joined as Partner in 2010.[6]
In 2014, Seedcamp announced a €20million Seed fund, which enables the early-stage investor in invest up to €200,000 into rounds between €300,000 and €2M. Seedcamp has invested in 24 seed stage startups[7] from its Seed Fund as of September 2015. The fund focuses on providing investment for startups looking to scale globally, rather than focusing on the initial hurdle of getting up-and-running.[8]
Seedcamp Platform
The Seedcamp Platform is a key way in which the first round fund supports all its companies from the moment they become a part of the Seedcamp family till the moment they successfully exit.
Seedcamp invests in three ways, including its Seed option. For pre-seed Startups must apply for an investment of either €75K for 7% or 3% as a warrant.[9] Applications for pre-seed funding from Seedcamp are open four times a year. All Seedcamp companies can access the Platform.
It is built on three key pillars; Learning, Network and Capital.[10] All companies have access to Mentors, Investors, constant learning and feedback through Office Hours, the Seedcamp Academy, Seedcamp Week’s in Berlin and London, and a bi-annual US Trip. Startups also have access to a Founder’s Pack with tools and services valued at €200K to help them scale.
Seedcamp Week
Seedcamp hosts three Seedcamp Weeks each year between London and Berlin. The week provides Seedcamp companies with the opportunity to gain valuable feedback from Mentors, including leaders in various sectors such as the sharing economy,[11] and connect with other Seedcamp Founders and Investors. The week usually follows onboarding week where newly invested companies officially become a part of the Seedcamp family and access the platform for the first time.[12]
Seedsummit
Seedsummit, is a platform aimed at making it easier for startup entrepreneurs to find the most active seed investors relevant to their business.[13] Significantly, Seedcamp was able to sign up 21 European investors agree on a standard term sheet for startups. Techcrunch presented this as a “historic move”.[14]
Performance and notable exits
As of September 2015, Seedcamp has backed 192 startups.[15] Over 91% of the Seedcamp companies secured further rounds of funding after their initial investment and in aggregate have raised over €350M from external investors. BaseKit alone has raised over $10M.[16]
Notable exits include: Mobclix bought by Velti for $50M,[17] RentMineOnline bought by RealPage for $9.5M ,[18] Crashpadder acquired by Airbnb[19] and Talasim acquired by Jeeran.[20]
