Early life and education

Shamim Haider Tirmazi was born in a small town of India. His father, Syed Baqar Ali, a govt. Servant, transferred and shifted with his family to Sahiwal (Montgomery) in early 1940s. Shamim Haider spent his early days of life in a 7-member middle-class family. He completed his education – primary to F. Sc. (1956) from the institutions of Sahiwal city. He passed B.A. examination (1958) as a private candidate. He got admission in B.Ed. class at Central Training College, Lahore and secured second position in Punjab (1959). Later, he joined Institute of Education and Research (Punjab University, Lahore) for M.Ed. (the very first class / batch in Pakistan) and got the degree in 1961. He was also offered UNESCO Fellowship in Australia, which was completed in 1984. He got his Ph.D. degree in Education from B.Z.University Multan, Pakistan in 1991

Career

Shamim Tirmazi started his professional career as untrained science teacher in 1956. He served at two high schools (269 E.B Burewala and 40/3-R Okara) from Dec 1956 to September 1958. After winning silver medal in B.Ed. examination, he was given honour to teach at Central Model school, Lahore, the most prestigious educational institution of Pakistan (Sept 1959 to Sept 1960). Then, after M.Ed., he served at Govt. Pilot Secondary School, Wahdat Colony, Lahore (Sept 1961 to Sept 1963). He was appointed as a Lecturer at Govt. Training College, Multan (University of Education at present) in September 1963 where he served for long 36 years and retired as associate professor in Sept 1999. After retirement, he got contract to serve as a teacher at B.Z.University Multan. He is associated with the department of Education of the University, teaching Research and Assessment to M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. classes until now

Publications

Ph.D. Thesis of Shamim Tirmazi entitled “A historical study of the determinants and Evolution of Islamic education system” was published in 1993. The title of the book was ‘Islam ka Nizam-i-Taaleem’. Two books related to literary criticism i.e. ‘Adab Aasaar’ and ‘Adab aur Asar’ were published in 1996 and 2010 respectively. Three books related to ‘wit and humour’ i.e. Phoowar (Light essays), Hanste Bolte Lafz (Social Columns), and Mein aur Merey (Personal Sketches) were published in 1986, 2003 and 2004 respectively. In 2014, these three books were published in the form of an ‘Omni edition’ with the title “Shaguftani”. All books were printed by two well established publishers i.e. Caravan publishers and Beacon books, Lahore – Multan. In addition to these books, many articles on education and Urdu literature were published in different magazines and newspapers of Pakistan.

  1. M. Ed. Thesis entitled “construction of a Semi-standardized Test of Reading Comprehension in English for 8-10 classes “under the supervision of Dr Boyd McCandless (1960-61).
  2. Ph. D. Thesis entitled ‘A historical study of the determinants and Evolution of Islamic Education system’ (1991) under the supervision of Dr M. A. Aziz
  3. Research project entitled “Development and Rasch Analysis of a Semi- Standardized Test of Maths for class 8” was submitted to the Department of Education, W.A.C.A.E. Perth, Australia (1984).
  4. Four theses of Ph.D. Education Scholars – two from BZU, Multan and two from University of Education, Punjab, were supervised
  5. Theses of M. Phil. and M.A./M. Ed. Students, supervised by Dr Tirmazi, during the last five decades, are in great number.
