Shopgate is a German/US company that develops mobile websites and native apps for online merchants. Shopgate offers services for online retailers to create, maintain and optimize native apps and mobile websites for smartphones and tablets as well shopping apps for the Apple TV.
Investments
The German start-up was founded in 2009 by Ortwin Kartmann and Andrea Anderheggen. The rationale behind the founding is described as “e-commerce is becoming more and more mobile. Merchants have responded to this shift by building mobile sites, which Shopgate aimed to provide.”[1]
In June 2013, Shopgate has raised $7 million in Series B funding led by Danish VC firm Northcap and Germany’s Creathor Ventures, in addition to the $2 million Series A funding provided by Creathor Ventures in August 2011.[2] Wladimir Baranoff-Rossine was then added as COO.[3]
In February 2014, Shopgate acqui-hired all four developers of the German software development company MagCorp to strengthen its Magento integration.[4]
In January 2016, after a Series C funding of $15 million, Shopgate officially announced the appointment of Marc Biel as Chief Executive Officer to lead its expansion strategy into the U.S. mobile market. The company's U.S. headquarters was subsequently moved to Austin, TX.[5]
