Sruthi Hariharan is born on January 1, 1989. She is an Indian film actress who predominantly appears in Kannada and Tamil films. After doing theatre and working as a background dancer in films, she began a career in acting. She debuted in the 2012 Malayalam film Cinema Company and got noticed after working in the Kannada film Lucia.

Early life

Sruthi Hariharan is a Tamil Palakkad Iyer,[1] hailing from Kerala,[2] who was raised in Bangalore, Karnataka.She did her schooling from Sishu Griha Montessori and high school. She graduated with a BBM degree from Christ University. She is trained in Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance and she is fluent in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi and can understand Telugu.[1]

She was interested in cultural activities and was a part of the cultural team at Christ College and later went on to do theatre.[3] After college, she wanted to take up dance as her profession but her family, particularly her father, was against it. She joined choreographer Imraan Sardariya's dance troupe and worked in the Kannada film industry as assistant choreographer and background dancer.[3] She was a background dancer in the industry for three years and featured in a number of songs.[4] Although she was "fascinated" by the film industry she did not intend to become an actor. However, she stated that she "knew it would be wonderful to be in front of the camera" and therefore started being a part of short films and documentaries and a few independent films.[3] She then got the opportunity to audition for a role in the Malayalam film Cinema Company.

Career

Shruti's film career was supposed to start off with a Tamil film but it got shelved [5] and Cinema Company marked her feature film debut. She had shot for two more Malayalam films, Thekku Thekkoru Desathu and Call Me @.[6] In Francis's Call Me @ she played the role of a "bubbly IT girl", while in Nandu's, Thekku Thekkoru Desathu she played a journalist.[7] She landed the lead role in the Kannada film Lucia by Pawan Kumar although she thought that her audition for the film went "horribly".[1] She played two characters in the film — one of a lower middle-class girl and the other of a film actress —[8] and dubbed for herself for the first time.[9] The second character was more glamorous that required her to "look hot" and lose weight and the actress stated that Glamour was "difficult for me".[1][8] Lucia was critically acclaimed and was later remade in several Indian languages.[10] Shruti's performance was well received and she was featured in Rediff's "Most Impressive Kannada Movie Debuts, 2013" list.[11] Later that year she appeared in another Kannada film Dyavre. The film, inspired by real life incidents of prisoners who escaped from a jail, saw Shruti playing the role a pregnant woman [6] who works in a garment factory.[5] The film also received rave reviews from critics.[12] She was offered a role in director Harsha's Bhajarangi too, but she could not commit herself to the film.[13]

In 2014, she was seen as the love interest of Kitty's character in Jacob Varghese's road movie Savaari 2. She accepted the role although she knew that she would appear in only a few scenes, shooting for 10 days for the film. She played a "rich spoilt brat" in the film and stated that she had to be "very girlie", which she said caused her difficulties as she considered herself "quite a tomboy".[14] Her next release was her first Tamil film Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan.[15][16] She was next seen in A. P. Arjun's Raate, which she signed even before the release of Lucia.[9] Her character in the film was that of a traditional village girl [6] and she was chosen among several girls who auditioned for the role as she could speak Kannada, with the director further stating that "her eyes and smile" caught his attention.[13]

She is simultaneously shooting for the Kannada film Sipaayi directed by Rajath Mayee,[17] and the Tamil independent art film Nila. She has also signed another Kannada film, Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykattu by Hemanth Rao,[18] and Balaji Sakthivel's next directorial Ra Ra Rajasekhar.[19]
