Slovenia competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's seventh consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics as an independent nation. Sailor Vasilij Žbogar (bronze in laser, Athens 2004, and silver in Beijing 2008), the only medalist returning from previous Games to represent Slovenia in Rio, was offered the honor of carrying the nation's flag at the opening ceremony, with the others either retiring or failing to qualify.[1] After being absent from the last two Olympics, the men's handball team qualified again for the Olympic tournament.
