"(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" is a song written by John Ellison[3] and first recorded by his group, Soul Brothers Six, in 1967, peaking at number 91 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[4]
It is not related to the other song by the same name written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King (and recorded by artists including the Drifters and Marvin Gaye).
Other versions
- The Fantastic Johnny C covered the song in 1968, reaching number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.[5]
- In 1974, Grand Funk Railroad recorded the song[6] for the group's album All the Girls in the World Beware!!!. Reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 on 22 February 1975,[7] it ranked #74 on Billboard's Hot 100 year-end chart for 1975 (but the 27 December 1975 print edition of Billboard, which contained the Hot 100 for 1975 that Casey Kasem followed, erred in placing it at #6 and in placing all the songs from #6 through #73 one position lower apiece). It is one of the band's best-known songs. Their version of the song appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the fictitious radio station K-DST.
- British blue-eyed soul band Q-Tips (featuring lead singer and guitarist Paul Young) recorded a version on their 1980 debut album, although on the label it was mistakenly credited to Goffin and King.[8]
- Conway Twitty released a cover on his 1977 album, Play Guitar Play.[9]
- Viva, a german Metal-Band, released their version of the song on their second album Dealers of the Night in 1982
- Buddy Guy released a version of the song on his 1993 album, Feels Like Rain.[10]
- Huey Lewis and the News charted with their own version, including it on their 1994 covers album, Four Chords & Several Years Ago.[11]
- Little Milton and Delbert McClinton collaborated on a cover version for Milton's 1999 album, Welcome to Little Milton.[12][13]
- Toploader released a version on their 2002 album, Magic Hotel.[14]
- Joss Stone released a version on her 2003 debut album, The Soul Sessions.[15]
