Southgate Community School District
The Southgate Community School District is a school district in Southgate, Michigan. It serves the entire city of Southgate and Allen Park south of the Sexton-Kilfoil Drain.[1] The Board of Education office is located at 14600 Dix Toledo Road.
History
During the summer of 1982, the Heintzen and McCann school districts merged into one and was named the Southgate Community School District.
Schools
- Elementary Schools
As of the 2013-14 school year, Southgate now has four elementary schools. Allen Elementary School (16500 McCann), Grogan Elementary School (13300 Burns), Shelters Elementary School (12600 Fordline), and Fordline Elementary School (14775 Fordline), all house grades K-5.
- Middle Schools
Southgate previously had two middle schools until the end of the 2012-13 school year. Gerisch Middle School (12601 McCann) held grades 6-7 and Davidson Middle School (15800 Trenton) held grades 8-9. At the end of the 2012-13 school year, Gerisch Middle School closed and was consolidated with Davidson Middle School, which now holds grades 6-8. 9th grade moved to Anderson High School.
- High Schools
Southgate previously had two high schools until the end of the 1981-82 school year. Schafer High School (Northline & McCann) and Southgate High School (15475 Leroy) both held grades 9-12. At the end of the 1981-82 school year, Schafer High School consolidated with Southgate High School, which was renamed Southgate Anderson High School in honor of the first mayor of Southgate.
- Other Schools
Southgate currently has two schools for students with academic issues. Asher Adult Education (14101 Leroy), is an alternative high school. Beacon Day Treatment (12601 McCann), which was formerly located in River Rouge, is a special education facility for students grades K-12 who can't normally function in a normal school setting.
Closed Schools
- Chormann Elementary School (15500 Howard), closed at the end of the 2012-13 school year due to a budget deficit. This building is currently empty.
- North Pointe Elementary School (18635 Bowie), closed at the end of the 2012-13 school year due to a budget deficit. This building has since become a day care facility.
- Gerisch Middle School (12601 McCann), closed at the end of the 2012-13 school year due to a budget deficit. This building has since become Beacon Day Treatment.
- Schafer High School (Northline and McCann), closed at the end of the 1981-82 school year and consolidated with Southgate High School, which was renamed Southgate Anderson High School. It is currently subdivided with Creative Montessori Academy and offices.
- McCann Elementary School (Eureka and McCann), was razed in 1990 for Olive Garden. The school was named after the McCann farm as well as McCann Street, which runs from Pennsylvania to Eureka and Northline to Pheasant Run.
- Hunter Elementary School (15500 Reeck), is now KinderCare Preschool. Hunter Elementary was named after Ray Hunter.
- Parkside Elementary School (14101 Leroy), is now Asher Adult Education.
- Heintzen Elementary School (unknown address), is located next door to Grogan Elementary and is used for board offices and the transportation department.
