Split is a 2016 American psychological horror thriller film directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan. The film stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jessica Sula, Haley Lu Richardson and Betty Buckley. The film has been described as a thematic sequel to the 2000 film Unbreakable.[3] Principal photography began on November 11, 2015, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2016 and will be released on January 20, 2017, by Universal Pictures.
Plot
Kevin (James McAvoy), a man with 23 different personalities, abducts three teenage girls. As the girls are held captive and attempt to escape, they begin to meet all of Kevin's 23 personalities, which include a little boy and a sophisticated woman. The nightmare truly begins when Kevin's 24th personality, an entity known as the "Beast" begins to emerge.

Production
On August 26, 2015, it was announced that M. Night Shyamalan would next direct a thriller film based on his own script, which would star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.[5] Shyamalan would also produce the film along with Jason Blum and Marc Bienstock.[5] On October 2, 2015, James McAvoy was cast in the film to play the lead, replacing Phoenix.[6] On October 12, 2015, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula, and Haley Lu Richardson were added to the cast.[7] On October 27, 2015, Universal Pictures came on board to release the film and titled it as Split.[8]
Principal photography on the film began on November 11, 2015 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[9][10] Reshoots occurred in June 2016.[11] According to Shyamalan, Split is his longest movie to this date.
Release
Split had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2016.[12] It also screened at the AFI Fest on November 15, 2016.[13][14]
The film is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2017 in United States and Canada.[15] Before that, it was originally scheduled to be released on January 27, 2017 in United States and Canada, as a result other movies were crowded to be released on that date with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Bastards, and A Dog's Purpose it was announced that it would be pushed back its release date by one week earlier this time from January 27, 2017, then to January 20, 2017, with the film's next date with then being occupied by Universal's own A Dog's Purpose.
Critical response
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 81%, based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10.[16] Metacritic reports an average score 75 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17]
Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian gave the film 4 stars out of 5, stating it to be a "masterful blend of Hitchcock, horror and therapy session."[18]
