Steve Turner, (born on 10 October 1984 in Sydney) is an Australian retired professional rugby league footballer of the 2000s and 2010s. A New South Wales State of Origin representative winger, he played his club football in the National Rugby League for the Penrith Panthers, Melbourne Storm, and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition.
Background
Turner was educated at St Dominics College. . He then went to Cambridge Park and played fullback there for several years before making it to first grade. Also an under-15 state level touch football player, Turner was signed by the Penrith Panthers in 2000. He was a standout for Penrith's Harold Matthews Cup side and won selection in the NSW under-17 team. During this time he was coached John Cartwright. He went on to play for NSW under-19s and the Junior Kangaroos.
Playing career
In 2002 Turner made his NRL debut for the Panthers against the Melbourne Storm. Turner then signed with Melbourne the next year. The reason given for the move to the Storm was that he was overshadowed by Queensland representative fullback Rhys Wesser.
In 2007, Turner was to be one of the inaugural members of the newly admitted Gold Coast Titans side after he announced in 2006 that he had signed a new deal to the Gold Coast. Turner agreed to join the Titans until the end of 2009 in June and then later chose to be selfish and backflip the deal. Cartwright was disgusted because he coached him as a junior. And for him to do that to a mentor like Cartwright was selfish.
He made his NSW State of Origin debut in Game II 2008 but has not played for the Blues since. The Blues were beaten 30-0 by the Maroons. And also got completely nielated and demolished by Greg Inglis.
He signed with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for the 2010 and 2011 seasons on a 2-year deal, competing for the place left by retiring Bulldogs icon Hazem El Masri. He scored his first double for the club in the Bulldogs' 60–14 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters in Round 3.
In 2011, Turner took over the goal kicking duties when Bryson Goodwin was injured. He has continued kicking goals since then. On 17 March 2013, Steve announced his retirement from Rugby League effective immediately due to a recurring knee injury.
