Studio Roosegaarde

Studio Roosegaarde is the social design lab of Daan Roosegaarde.[1] The studio was founded in 2006 and is based in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Shanghai, China.[2] The team working at the studio focusses on exploring the relationship between people, art, space, and technology.[3] It has made public site-specific art installations such as Dune,[4] Intimacy,[4] Crystal,[5] Smart Highway [6] and the Smog Free Project.[7] The Smog Free Project gained a lot of attention because it promises to clean smog out of the air and produce gems that will be made into pieces of jewelry.[8]

Icoon Afsluitdijk

Icoon Afsluitdijk aims to form a subtle, interactive layer of light to emphasize the unique experience between man and landscape that the afsluitdijk embodies. ‘The dutch landscape has traditionally been a place for innovation,’ Roosegaarde says. ‘Our dikes symbolize the creativity power of the netherlands when it comes to living with water. Now it is time for an update.’ Daan Roosegaarde.[9]

The Minister of Infrastructure and Environment Melanie Schultz van Haegen and Daan Roosegaarde unveiled the new designs for ‘Icoon Afsluitdijk’ during a festive kick off weekend on 2–4 September 2016, marked by a special edition of ‘Waterlicht’ and an exhibition of the new permanent and temporary concepts to be realised in the coming year. Roosegaarde presented works which are being developed to enhance the beauty of the dike and its position as a showcase for Dutch design, water engineering and as a prototype for the smart cities of tomorrow. Permanent works include ‘Gates of Light’, a unique retroreflective layer developed by Roosegaarde for the Afsluitdijk which will cover the concrete of the Lorentz and Stevin lock complexes. The 60 historical floodgates are renovated and enhanced by a retroreflective coating making the use of street lighting obsolete. Headlights of passing cars will create a cinematic experience and a spectacular entrance to the dike.

Beyond

Beyond is the largest lenticular print in the world. It’s meant to evoke the cloud paintings of the 17th century’s Dutch Masters. Roosegaarde gives the classic tableau a modern update, with lenticular printing technology.[10] A more than 100 meter long 3D cloud wall located at Departure Hall 3 of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol giving the impression of providingmeters of depth although only 10 centimeters in thickness. Beyond uses a unique printing technology to create a groundbreaking visual "augmented reality", using lenses that produce perspective and movement effects when the work is observed from different angles. Its 3D effect is enhanced by yellowish-white led lamps embedded in the wall, creating a space that is both physical and poetical. The artwork is the largest of its kind worldwide.

Smog Free Project

Roosegaarde's most recent project is the Smog Free Project, using patented ion technology he is building the world's largest smog vacuum cleaner. The Smog Free Tower produces smog-free bubbles of public space, allowing people to breathe and experience clean air for free. In order to create a tangible souvenir, Roosegaarde designed Smog Free Rings and Smog Free Cufflinks made of compressed smog particles from Smog Free Tower. By sharing Smog Free Jewellery, you donate 1000m3 of clean air to the city.[11] In September 2016, the Smog Free Tower will travel to China for a tour, starting with Beijing.[12]

Waterlicht

Waterlicht is a dream landscape about the power and poetry of water. As a virtual flood, it shows how high the water could reach without human intervention. Innovation is a natural part of the DNA of the Dutch landscape through its dikes and creative thinking, yet we almost seem to have forgotten this. Waterlicht is a powerful and poetic experience to remember. Waterlicht consists of wavy lines of light made with the latest LED technology, software and lenses. Originally created for the Dutch District Water Board Rijn & IJssel, the artwork has now travelled to the Museumplein in Amsterdam, Nuit Blanche in Paris, France and UNESCO Schokland, the Netherlands. WATERLICHT will continue its journey to create more water awareness.[13]

Windlicht

A team of designers and engineers, led by Daan Roosegaarde, have realized ‘windlicht‘ (windlight) at the Eneco wind farm in st. Annaland, Zeeland. Creating the missing link between the dutch and the beauty of our new landscape, the artwork comprises a sequence of bright green lines that connects one windmill to the next, filling the sky with a dynamic dance of light and movement. Special software and tracking technology detects blades rotating at 280 kilometers per hour (174 mph), forming an ever-changing network of color and illumination that fills in the gaps between the neighboring turbines.[14]

Van Gogh Path

The artist Daan Roosegaarde developed this 600 metre cycle path that contains thousands of twinkling coloured stones. The path combines innovation with cultural heritage in the town of Nuenen NL, the place where Van Gogh lived in 1883. The stones are charged by daylight and display fragments of the famous Starry Night painting by Van Gogh. This form of ‘techno poetics’ is the contemporary artist’s ode to the old Master.[15]

Rainbow Station

Rainbow Station, an artwork made in collaboration with Leiden University was launched in honour of the renovated 125-year-old historic Amsterdam Central Station. Rainbow Station can be seen every day for a year for a brief moment within an hour after sunset.[16]

Smart Highway

In 2014 Roosegaarde opened the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path[17] between Nuenen and Eindhoven, made of thousands twinkling stones inspired by The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. The project is part of Smart Highway, creating interactive and sustainable roads of tomorrow with Heijmans infrastructure.

Lotus

Lotus 7.0 is a living interactive wall which had its premiere in Paris.[18] When approaching the installation, hundreds of flowers made out of smart foils blossom. "We are at the dawn of a new nature," says Daan Roosegaarde.[19]

Intimacy

The studio partnered with Dutch fashion designers to develop a high tech fashion garment whose material made out of opaque smart e-foils which reacts to encounters with people.[20]

Dune

Another key work, entitled Dune, is a public interactive light and sound landscape consisting of large amounts of fibres which brighten according to sounds and motions of passing visitors.

Techno Poetry

Roosegaarde's tactile high-tech environments enables viewer and space become one. This connection, established between ideology and technology, results in what Roosegaarde calls "techno-poetry".[21] His often interactive work connects people with art whilst connecting viewers amongst themselves.

Interactions with visitors and sharing experiences are key elements of Studio Roosegaarde’s projects. Roosegaarde's artworks are best shown in cultural institutions and public exhibitions around the world, creating unique site-specific installations.

Studio Roosegaarde continuously develops interactive designs for your future landscape as site specific commissions. Functioning as an interactive laboratory, Studio Roosegaarde creates new projects such as Dune 4.2 and Marbles for specific environments.

Studio Roosegaarde exhibited at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Google Zeitgeist, Tate Modern, the Tokyo National Museum, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris and the Victoria & Albert Museum.[22]

Recognition

Roosegaarde has won several prizes such as the London Design Innovation Medal,[23] the INDEX: Award 2013 & People's Choice Award,[24] Dutch Design Award[25] and the Charlotte Köhler Award in 2012.[26] He is the Kunstweek Artist of the Year 2016, and selected by Forbes and Good 100 as a creative change maker. Roosegaarde is Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum[27]

Public speaking

Roosegaarde (Born on 24 July 1979) is a frequent design lecturer, most notably at the Design Indaba Conference[28] in Cape Town in 2013 and TEDxBinnenhof,[29] the World Economic Forum in Davos,[30] and TV guest at De Wereld Draait Door,[31] Zomergasten 2013[32] and College Tour[33] in 2016.
