Sulem Urbina is a Mexican amateur women's boxer, who currently resides in Phoenix.[1] She was born on July 8, 1990, in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.[1] Her husband, Andrews Soto, is her boxing trainer and manager.[1]
She was raised in a modest home with both of her parents, and is the middle child, with two older brothers and two younger brothers.[1] At age four, she relocated with her family to the United States.[1] She is fluent in both English and Spanish. Since childhood, Urbina has always been a very active female athlete, having competed for teams in basketball, cross country, and softball.[1]
Urbina discovers boxing
In 2001, at the age of ten, Urbina discovered boxing when she accompanied her two older brothers to a local gym.[1] Her brothers weren’t comfortable with her sparring and training with them.[1] Urbina's father instructed her brothers to allow her to participate with them.[1] She began her boxing training when she weighed just 75 lbs.[1]
High School
She attended South Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and graduated in 2008. In addition to boxing, she was a member of her school's ROTC program.[1]
Urbina meets Andrews Soto
In 2007, Urbina sought out her current manager and boxing trainer Andrews Soto, because his boxing team was winning in boxing competitions across Arizona, as well as many National Tournaments.[1] When they met, Soto tested her commitment to the sport, by putting her through a rigorous training routine to see if she would return.[1] She continued to train under Soto, and they formed a bond based on their dedication and love for the sport of boxing.[1] Urbina and Soto married in 2010.[1]
Amateur career
Urbina’s has accumulated 96 Bouts, including national and international competition.[1] In 2007 and 2009, she was the Arizona Golden Glove Champion.[1] In 2009, she placed third at the U.S. National Golden Gloves tournament. She has travelled all across the U.S. to compete in tournaments, including trips to Florida, Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico, and California. She is now the 2013-14 Mexican National Champion at the weight of 112 lbs (51 kg). While representing Mexico she has competed internationally in countries such as Brazil, Mexico,Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Urbina is the current 2014 Independence Cup Gold Medalist, 2014 Central American Games Silver Medalist, 2014 Continental Championships Bronze Medalist.
