Super Idol (Chinese: 超级偶像) is a Taiwanese music competition to find new singing talent; the winner of which receives a recording contract. The show is produced by Sanlih E-Television. It premiered on October 27, 2007 on SET Metro.
Hosts
Regine Li hosted the first six seasons, but due to her health,[1] replacements hosted the show until May 26, 2012 when Fang Fangfang took over to be the permanent host.
Format
Point scheme
In the start of each season, the judges will decides on promoting the contestant to the next round according to the number of lights turned on (votes). After the performances, the contestant will be promoted according to the number of points.
In the first to the fifth season, one of the five judges will turn on the table light if the contestant made an error. The contestant have to stop singing once three lights were turned on. The host will allow the judges to give the contestants feedback and a chance for a wildcard. If the contestant have five lights turned on or three lights or more after 30 seconds, the contestant is eliminated. If the contestant have less than three lights turned on, he or she advances to the next round.
From the sixth season onwards, the rules changed. The contestant have to stop singing once two lights were turned on. If a third light is turned on, he or she is eliminated straight away. If the contestant have less than two lights turned on, he or she advances to the next round.
Point system
The points will be handed over to the production crew after each performance. After the feedback by the judges, the average or the total score will be shown on the screen. Each judge is allowed to give each contestant up to 10 points.
For the first season, the total score was shown, but in the later part of the season, the contestants commonly have the same points such that the decimal points will be shown to determine the ranks. From the second season onwards the judges cannot give the contestants the total score.
Cards
After a PK performance by two individual contestants, the five judges will raise a "card" (vote) to determine who shall promote to the next round. The contestant who gets 3 or more cards will be promoted, whereas the other is considered for disqualification.
From the fifth season, the voting will be represented by lights after consolidation. Also, if there are six judges, both contestants advances to the next round if they both get 3 votes.
PK Trio
In the fifth and seventh seasons, three contestants will PK against each other. After the performances, out of the five judges, either two contestants with two votes, or the contestants with the most number of votes, will promote to the next round. The other contestant(s) is considered for disqualification.
PK Duo
In the fifth season, like the trio PKs, two contestants will PK against each other. After the performances, out of the six judges, the contestant with the most number of votes will promote to the next round. The other contestant is considered for disqualification. However, if there were three votes each, both contestants advances to the next round.

Season 1
Season 1 begins on October 27, 2007 as the premiere season. Hundreds of contestants will face a series of elimination rounds in each episode, each theme which focuses like pop songs or even PK episodes. After 7 months of gruelling competition, the finals started in May. The winner, Jing Chang, receives a recording contract from Gold Typhoon. Season 1 ended with 35 episodes.
Season 2
Season 2 begins on 28 June 2008 after the first season. 61 contestants will face a series of elimination rounds in each episode. After 6 months of gruelling competition, the finals started on 28 December 2008. The winner, Ai Cheng, receives a recording contract from Skyhigh Entertainment. Season 2 ended with 32 episodes.
Season 3
Season 3 begins on 7 February 2009, promising to be the biggest of Super Idol history. Hundreds of contestants from around the world will face a series of elimination rounds in each episode. Two contestants from the last season will be competing again.
- When the Top 20 results has been released on 11 April, starting from this season, the contestant with the lowest points will be eliminated straight away. Also, each episode will see an MVP, who has a chance to be seen as the star of the month in TTV, SET, Unique and Ai Ka La's media, interviews, and endorser for companies' products. Also, celebrities will get to sing along with some contestants in random episodes.
- This season sees Australian national Max Grieve in the special guest segment. Grieve's performance was simulcast to a crowd of 60 people in his home town, Canberra.
- The finals started on 10 October 2009, LIVE. The winner, Zhu Li Jing, receives a recording contract from Warner Music (Taiwan). Season 3 ended with 39 episodes.
Season 4
Season 4 begins on 7 November 2009. Hundreds of contestants from around the world will face a series of elimination rounds in each episode. Four contestants from last seasons will be competing again as three competing contestants (group). The finals started on 17 July 2010, LIVE. The winner, Zeng Yu Jia, receives a recording contract from Seed Music. Season 4 ended with 35 episodes.
- Also this season sees Jing Chang in the special guest segment on 23 May. On 30 May, Super Idol invites Jing and Ai Wen back on stage to PK with the contestants.
Season 5
Season 5 begins on 24 July 2010. Hundreds of contestants from around the world will face a series of elimination rounds in each episode. Two contestants from the last season will be competing again.
- To encourage contestants from North America to compete, Los Angeles free-to-air TV network Han Tian Television collaborates with SET for the first time. Auditions for the Los Angeles stop was held in April 24 and 25.
- This season will see PK Trio and PK Duo in the 5th to 11th episode.
- The finals started on 9 April 2011, LIVE. The winner, Ai Yi Lang, receives a recording contract from Sony Music Entertainment (Taiwan). Season 5 ended with 39 episodes.
