Superfruit (often stylized as SUP3RFRUIT) is a comedy web show on YouTube, hosted by Mitchell Coby Michael Grassi (known professionally as Mitch Grassi)[1] and Scott Richard Hoying (known professionally as Scott Hoying).[2] Grassi and Hoying are both members of the a cappella group Pentatonix,[3][4] and have been friends since they were 10 years old.[5]
While the show mainly focuses on themselves and comedy, the show occasionally features vocal performances by Grassi and Hoying. They also tend to have a number of collaborations with many YouTube celebrities, such as Tyler Oakley, Hannah Hart, Mamrie Hart, Miranda Sings, Todrick Hall, Ricky Dillon, and Connor Franta. On October 18, 2016, the pair released an original song Bad 4 Us on their channel. Later, on November 15, 2016, they released a second original song Sweet Life, with more official music planned for 2017.[6]
The channel currently has over two million subscribers and has accumulated over 248 million views.[7][8][9]
Formation
According to Grassi, "[Scott and I] were at IHOP one day and both discussed how we wanted to individually start [YouTube] channels. [Then] we were [like, 'Why don't we just do it together?']"[10] According to Scott, the name Superfruit "came from Mitch's random mind".[11] The first Superfruit video was released on August 13, 2013.[12]
Video content
Superfruit consists mainly of vlogs about the duo's daily lives and various casual games and competitions, but the channel also features a number of musical projects. Both Grassi and Hoying are members of the LGBTQ community.[13][14] Although they are not dating, the pair gave themselves the portmanteau Scömìche to represent their relationship.[15] Together they have a cat Wyatt Blue Grassi-Hoying, who appears in a number of their videos and logo. Most videos feature just Hoying and Grassi, however several include other artists or guests.
End segments
Superfruit has had many different end segments to their videos, which have varied over time but (as of September 2015) consist of Song Suggestions and Weekly Obsessions. The 'Weekly Obsessions' segment began from the first Superfruit episode and has continued ever since. They usually consist of items that Grassi or Hoying have recently purchased, and are often items of clothing. In the 'Comment on Comments' segment, inspired by YouTuber Grace Helbig's previous channel, DailyGrace, featured a number of comments on the last week's video, which were commented on by Grassi and Hoying. It featured one positive and one negative comment. This segment was discontinued after the episode "HEADS UP!". In the eighth episode of their web show, Superfruit began making weekly song suggestions. They entitled this segment 'Hey everyone! Here's a good song! *Don't listen to anything else today', which has adapted through each episode.
Other notable works
Outside of their YouTube channel, Grassi and Hoying promoted The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water as Superfruit with an MTV commercial in which Grassi gets a tattoo of SpongeBob SquarePants on his arm.[16][17][18][19][20]
As Superfruit, Grassi and Hoying appeared on The Grace Helbig Show on an episode airing June 7, 2015, on which the duo perform various songs written for the show.[21][22]
