The line is 22 km (14 mi) long with 19 stations and one terminal. Section 1, from Ferdowsi Square to Darvazeh Shemiran, opened in April 2008. Section 2 from Darvazeh shemiran to Shohada Square opened in February 2009. On May 24, 2009, Section 3 from Ferdowsi Square to Engelab Square opened. On July 23, 2012 two more stations were inaugurated, connecting line 4 with line 5.[2]
Currently there are 19 stations in operation on Line 4's trunk line, plus two more on the branch line serving Mehrabad Airport.[3][4]
Route
The line starts at the intersection with Line 5 at Ekbatan (Eram-e Sabz) Station, north of Tehran-Karaj Freeway near Eram-e Sabz Park in western Tehran. It then continues southward through Ekbatan town. It then turns towards east, running along Karaj Makhsus Road, Azadi Square, Azadi Street, and Enghelab Street. The line keeps going in a general East-West direction for 11.2 km (7.0 mi). Then the line turns towards southeast along Rowshandelan Street and goes along the same direction until Shohada Square. Then it again turns towards east and runs along Piruzi Street. Then it leans northeastern-ward and runs along Doran Expressway until reaching its terminus at Shahid Kolahdooz Station.
Mehrabad Airport Extension
A 2.8 km (1.7 mi) branch line starting from Bimeh Station towards Mehrabad International Airport was opened on March 15 2016. The branch may act as an independent line from Line 4, using unique, more luggage friendly train sets, with Bimeh Station acting as an interchange station. The branch has three stations, including Bimeh Station.[5]
Future
Western Expansion
A 5.2 km (3.2 mi) long extension going northwards from Ekbatan (Eram-e Sabz) Station is proposed.[6] The new extension will have 4 stations and run along Shahayegh Boulevard and Jannatabad Boulevard, and serves Jannat Abad neighbourhood in Northeastern Tehran.
Eastern Expansion
A 9.3 km (5.8 mi) long extension going northeast-wards from Shahid Kolahdooz Station is proposed.[6] The proposed section will run elevated along Doran Expressway up until Damavand Street. Then it continues north along Hajar-ebn Ady Street and Estakhr Street. The extension will serve Tehranpars and Qanat Kowsar neighbourhoods.
